A Yakima County resident has died from bird flu after exposure to infected dairy cattle, health officials announced on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the first bird flu death in the United States this year. The death is the third linked to highly pathogenic avian influenza in the country since the virus spread into American dairy herds in 2024, and the first in which a person was infected through work with cattle.

The Yakima Health District said the person had underlying health conditions and was hospitalised with severe illness before dying on Sunday. Officials have withheld the person's name, age and gender out of respect for the family. The district also confirmed a third human case in the county: another dairy-exposed resident who has not become severely ill or needed hospital treatment.

Key Points

• A Yakima County resident died on Sunday, November 1, 2026, after bird flu exposure at a dairy with infected cattle.
• It is the first bird flu death in the United States in 2026 and the third in the country since 2024.
• Three human cases have now been linked to dairy exposure in Yakima County; the other two have not been severe.
• Washington has confirmed about 40 infected dairy herds, most of them in Yakima County, with one in neighbouring Benton County.
• Health officials say the risk to the general public remains low and there is no evidence of person-to-person spread.

What Happened

The Yakima Health District announced the death in a news release on Sunday, November 1. It said the resident had been exposed to avian influenza at a dairy where cattle were infected, was hospitalised as symptoms became severe, and later died from complications of the infection. The district described the outcome as heartbreaking and said its thoughts were with the family, while declining to share further personal details.

The same announcement confirmed a third human case in the county. That person was also exposed to infected dairy cattle but has not experienced severe illness or been admitted to hospital. The district is working with the state health department to monitor close contacts of the patients for symptoms.

Washington's first dairy cattle infections were confirmed on October 8, 2026, at two Yakima County dairies. The virus spread rapidly through the county's farms, and on October 26 the Benton Franklin Health District reported a positive dairy in neighbouring Benton County. The US Department of Agriculture has since confirmed more herds, bringing the statewide total to about 40, the fifth-highest of any state.

Background: Bird Flu in American Dairy Cattle

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) was long seen mainly as a threat to poultry and wild birds. That changed in early 2024, when the virus jumped into American dairy herds. Since then it has spread between cattle through infected animals and contaminated milk, equipment, vehicles, clothing, footwear and people moving between farms.

Human infections in the United States have remained rare and almost always linked to direct animal contact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had recorded 72 human cases nationally as of October 15, 2026, with no human-to-human spread ever recorded in the country. Two earlier deaths were recorded: an elderly person in Louisiana in January 2025 (H5N1) and a Washington resident in November 2025 (H5N5).

The Yakima death is a milestone in two ways: it is the first American fatality of 2026, and the first death of a person infected on a dairy farm. The CDC said the person was infected with H5N1, and genetic analysis found no changes that would make it spread more easily or cause more severe illness.

Bird Flu Death in Washington and the Farm Response

For dairy workers, the Yakima cases underline how the risk is concentrated where people work closely with infected animals. State agriculture officials do not consider wild birds the primary source of the strain now affecting dairy herds; instead, the virus moves farm to farm through shared equipment, vehicles, clothing and the movement of animals and workers.

That is why the response has focused on the farms themselves. More than 7,000 bird flu tests have been carried out on Washington farms over the past two years. Officials urge dairy workers to use protective equipment and report symptoms early.

Reactions and Quotes

Dr Dave Atteberry, health officer for the Yakima Health District, said in a statement: "While this is a serious and heartbreaking outcome, the risk to the general public remains low." He urged residents to follow public health guidance and said the district would continue working with state partners to track the outbreak.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson also issued a statement expressing sympathy for the family and backing the health response. The state health department shared the announcement and repeated that there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission in the United States.

Why It Matters

The death tests two reassurances that have held since the dairy outbreak began: that human cases are rare, and usually mild. Neither has collapsed — three cases in one county, one fatal, still leaves the general public at low risk — but the fatality shows the risk to farm workers is real, not theoretical.

It also matters for timing. The Washington outbreak is still expanding, with new herds confirmed in the past week. Each new herd is another workplace where workers may be exposed — and another chance for the virus to adapt, which is why the CDC's genetic analysis was reported so prominently.

What Happens Next

Health officials will keep monitoring close contacts of the three Yakima County cases and testing herds across Yakima and Benton counties, with further USDA confirmations expected as testing continues.

For the public, the advice is unchanged: dairy workers should use protective equipment and seek care promptly for flu-like symptoms after animal exposure. The signal to watch is whether new cases appear outside the dairy-worker group — the line the virus has not yet crossed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who died in Yakima County? A resident exposed to infected dairy cattle, with underlying health conditions, hospitalised with severe illness before dying on November 1, 2026. Officials withheld the person's name, age and gender.

Is this the first bird flu death in the US in 2026? Yes. It is the first American bird flu death of 2026 and the third since the virus became a national public health concern in 2024.

How many human cases are there in Yakima County? Three, all linked to exposure at dairies with infected cattle. Only the person who died became severely ill; the other two have not needed hospital treatment.

Can bird flu spread between people? There is no evidence of person-to-person transmission in the United States, and genetic analysis of this case found no changes that would make spread easier.

How many dairy herds are infected in Washington? About 40 statewide, most in Yakima County, after USDA confirmations in early November. First detections were on October 8 at two Yakima dairies.
