Teamsters president Sean O'Brien, who describes himself as a lifelong Democrat, has endorsed Republican Senator Ashley Moody in Florida's special Senate election, in one of the most striking cross-party endorsements of the 2026 midterm campaign. O'Brien announced on Sunday, November 1, 2026, on X that he had voted in Florida for the first time and cast his ballot for Moody, whose seat is on the ballot on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The announcement drew immediate attention because O'Brien leads the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a 123-year-old union with about 1.3 million members, and because it cut across the party lines that normally define labour endorsements in a Senate race.

Key Points

• Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien announced on November 1, 2026, that he had voted for Republican Senator Ashley Moody in Florida.
• O'Brien, who called himself a lifelong Democrat, said it was his first time voting in Florida.
• He credited Moody with protecting workers' pensions, defending good-paying jobs and supporting union apprenticeship programmes.
• He said the Teamsters look forward to working with Moody on the Senate HELP Committee to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act.
• Moody said she was proud to have his support; Democratic nominee Angie Nixon replied that Moody had never walked a picket line with workers.

What Happened

O'Brien made the announcement two days before Election Day, in a post on X in which he said he had voted in Florida for the first time and had cast his ballot for Moody. The timing mattered: the endorsement landed at the very end of the campaign for a special Senate election that will decide who holds the seat through January 2029, as voters across the country were casting ballots in the November 3 midterms. In Florida, the race pits Moody, the Republican incumbent appointed to the seat, against Democratic nominee Angie Nixon, a Jacksonville state lawmaker.

O'Brien framed his support in terms of workers' interests rather than party loyalty. He credited Moody with helping protect workers' pensions, defend good-paying jobs and support well-funded union apprenticeship programmes — the retirement security, job quality and training concerns at the centre of the Teamsters' agenda. He also pointed to future legislative work, saying the Teamsters look forward to working with her on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, known as the HELP Committee, to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act. One report noted that O'Brien's announcement was a personal endorsement rather than a formal union-wide endorsement: the union's president speaking in his own name, not necessarily a decision taken by the Teamsters as an institution.

Background and Context

Moody came to the Senate by appointment rather than election. Governor Ron DeSantis appointed her in January 2025 to complete the term of Marco Rubio, who left the Senate to join the Trump administration. Moody had previously served as Florida's attorney general. The special election on November 3, 2026, asks Florida voters to decide who holds the seat for the remainder of the term, through January 2029, and Moody is seeking election to it in her own right.

The Teamsters, founded in 1903, represent workers across trucking, freight, warehousing, package delivery and many other industries, and their endorsements have long been watched as a signal of where organised labour stands. Unions in the United States have historically aligned most closely with Democrats, so a Teamsters president endorsing a Republican senator is unusual enough to make news on its own. O'Brien's self-description as a lifelong Democrat made the break more striking still: he was not presenting himself as a Republican convert, but as a Democrat who had decided that, in this race, the candidate who had worked with labour on pensions, jobs and apprenticeships was Moody.

Teamsters Moody Endorsement

The Teamsters Moody endorsement is significant because it separates a candidate's party label from the labour record O'Brien chose to highlight. Pensions are a long-running concern for Teamsters members, many of whom depend on multi-employer pension plans whose health has been a subject of political debate for years. Apprenticeship programmes matter for a similar reason: they are the pipeline through which young workers enter skilled, unionised jobs, and their funding determines whether those routes remain open. By naming both, O'Brien signalled that his support was rooted in the union's core concerns rather than in a general political realignment.

The reference to the Faster Labor Contracts Act also pointed to the legislative agenda O'Brien hopes to advance with Moody's help. The Senate HELP Committee, which handles labour and workplace legislation, is where such measures are shaped, and O'Brien's statement explicitly tied his support to working with Moody there.

Reactions and Quotes

Moody welcomed the endorsement, saying she was proud to have O'Brien's support.

Nixon responded on X with a sharply different message, writing that "Ashley Moody never walked the line with you" and claiming rank-and-file Teamster support. Her reply aimed to draw a line between the union's leadership and its members, suggesting that workers themselves, rather than their national president, would back her candidacy. The exchange captured the central dispute the endorsement created: whether O'Brien's personal vote for Moody speaks for Teamsters members in Florida, or whether the rank and file will make a different choice at the ballot box.

Why It Matters

The endorsement matters for three reasons. First, it shows how labour politics in 2026 is not always following party lines: a Democratic-identifying union president backed a Republican incumbent on the strength of specific workplace issues. Second, it highlights the issues O'Brien chose to emphasise — pensions, good-paying jobs and apprenticeships — which are likely to remain central to the labour debate in the next Congress regardless of who wins in Florida. Third, it tests the influence of national labour leaders over their own members, a question Nixon raised directly when she claimed rank-and-file support.

What Happens Next

Florida voters decide the special Senate election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the result will show whether O'Brien's endorsement helped Moody, hurt her, or made little difference. Attention will then turn to the Senate HELP Committee and to whether the Faster Labor Contracts Act, which O'Brien named in his announcement, gains momentum in the new Congress.
