President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that the United States is close to a trade deal with Canada, and he revealed a new term at its heart: a US Canada trade deal under which Canada would supply fertilizer to the United States without any tariffs. The announcement, made on Fox News' Fox & Friends on Election Day, is the most specific public detail yet about what a renewed agreement might contain for American farmers.

"Canada is very good, we're going to make a deal with Canada very soon. We're going to make a great deal," Trump said. The fertilizer pledge speaks directly to farm costs at a moment when tariffs on Canada have become a political issue in northern border states, including Michigan and Maine, ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Key Points

• President Donald Trump said on November 3, 2026, that the United States is close to a trade deal with Canada, speaking on Fox News' Fox & Friends.
• The new specific term is tariff-free Canadian fertilizer for the United States, a detail absent from the leaders' November 1 call.
• Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke on Sunday about a deal Trump said would benefit the US agricultural community.
• Carney said teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver an outcome, while no formal deal has yet been announced.
• The two countries have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other in recent months, and relief for steel and automobiles is also under discussion.

What Happened

Trump's remarks came on the morning of Election Day, when voters across the United States were choosing members of Congress, governors and state officials. Asked about Canada on Fox & Friends, he predicted a deal was imminent. His language was confident, but the fertilizer detail gave the interview its news value: Canada, he said, is going to give fertilizer to the United States without any tariffs as part of the deal.

That is a concrete offer in a negotiation so far described mostly in general terms. Earlier statements spoke of progress, of teams working toward an outcome, and of a deal beneficial to American agriculture. None had singled out a particular product or a tariff-free commitment. The fertilizer term changes that, giving farmers, suppliers and lawmakers something specific to weigh.

The United States and Canada are each other's largest trading partners in many sectors, and their economies are deeply intertwined, from energy and automobiles to agriculture and manufactured goods. In recent months, however, that relationship has been strained by rounds of tariffs, with each side imposing billions of dollars in duties on the other's goods. Businesses dependent on cross-border supply chains have faced higher costs and uncertainty, and consumers have felt the effects in prices.

Trump and Carney spoke on Sunday, November 1, about a deal Trump said would benefit US agriculture, and Carney said teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver an outcome. That call produced no published terms, and Tuesday's fertilizer pledge is the first specific element since. The timing is political: tariffs on Canada surfaced as an issue in Michigan and Maine ahead of the midterms.

Fertilizer is one of the largest single input costs for many farms, and its price feeds directly into the cost of growing corn, wheat, soybeans and other staple crops. When fertilizer is expensive, margins tighten, planting decisions change and food prices can rise. A tariff-free supply from Canada, one of the world's major fertilizer producers, would remove a layer of cost at the border and give American growers more predictability when they plan a season.

For Canada, fertilizer is a strategic export, tied to its potash and nutrient industries. Offering it tariff-free could be presented in Ottawa as goodwill that protects a valuable market while broader talks continue. For Washington, it shows farmers a tangible benefit before harder questions about steel and automobiles are settled.

Trump's own words are, for now, the fullest public account of the fertilizer term. He framed the coming deal in positive terms, calling Canada "very good" and promising a "great deal" very soon. Carney has spoken of teams working in the coming weeks to deliver an outcome, language that suggests a process still under way rather than a finished text.

Several questions remain open: how much fertilizer the commitment would cover, whether it would apply to all products or only some, and when it would take effect. Nor is it clear what Canada would receive in return, or how the pledge fits alongside talks on relief from US tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles. Farm groups and border-state lawmakers will watch for the next official statement from either capital.

The story matters for three reasons. First, household budgets: fertilizer costs influence crop prices, and crop prices influence food prices. Second, the US-Canada relationship itself, strained by months of tariff escalation; a concrete concession could help rebuild trust between allies whose trade is worth hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Third, it arrives on Election Day, when border-state voters judge leaders partly on whether trade policy helps or hurts their livelihoods.

The next test is whether the two governments confirm the fertilizer term in writing and explain its scope. Watch for a joint statement, a statement from Carney's office, or a briefing from US trade officials in the days after the election. If negotiators move quickly, the coming weeks could produce a fuller outline of a deal. Steel and automobiles remain the other big files, with no prospective deals announced there either.

What did Trump announce about Canada on November 3, 2026?
He said on Fox & Friends that the United States is close to a trade deal with Canada and that Canada will give fertilizer to the United States without any tariffs as part of it.

Is the US-Canada trade deal final?
No. No signed agreement or formal deal has been announced. Trump described a deal as very soon, and Carney said teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver an outcome.

Why is tariff-free fertilizer important for US farmers?
Fertilizer is a major input cost for growing staple crops. Removing tariffs on Canadian fertilizer would lower costs and give growers more predictability when planning a season.

What else is being discussed in the trade talks?
Both sides have also discussed more relief from US tariffs on Canadian steel and automobiles, but no prospective deals on those sectors have been announced.

What did Trump and Carney agree on November 1?
They spoke about a trade deal Trump said would benefit the US agricultural community, and Carney said teams would work in the coming weeks to deliver an outcome. No terms were published from that call.
