Marty Erlichman, the manager who discovered Barbra Streisand when she was 19 and guided her career for more than six decades, has died aged 97. Erlichman died on Saturday, October 31, 2026, of age-related causes, and family representatives announced his death on Sunday, November 1. Streisand, now 84, led the tributes, saying she had believed her lifelong manager would live forever and that the pair never even had a contract between them.

The death closes one of the longest partnerships in show business. Erlichman was the only manager Streisand ever had, steering the business side of a career that carried her from a New York nightclub stage to Broadway, the recording charts, film sets and sold-out arenas around the world.

What Happened

Family representatives confirmed Erlichman’s death on Sunday, November 1, 2026, a day after he died at 97. The cause was given as age-related causes. No funeral arrangements had been announced in the first reports, and the family asked, in lieu of flowers, for donations in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the National Kidney Foundation.

Streisand shared her tribute on Instagram on Sunday, alongside a photograph of the pair. “Although Marty lived a long and full life, nothing can prepare you for the reality of losing someone so dear,” she wrote. “I truly thought he would live forever. In my eyes, he was simply indestructible — always by my side, through everything.” She added that he could never be replaced and that she would be forever grateful for his friendship, loyalty and unwavering support.

The tribute returned to the detail that has come to define their working relationship: the two never signed a formal management contract. “We never even had a contract, just a handshake,” Streisand has said of a partnership that lasted for the whole of her professional life. In her 2023 memoir, “My Name Is Barbra,” she described the trust at the heart of that arrangement.

Reports also noted that Erlichman had stepped back from day-to-day management earlier in 2026, at 96, as preparations were under way for a Cannes Film Festival tribute to Streisand. Even then, Streisand said, just weeks before his death he had been trying to persuade her to go on tour again, telling her he would be there every step of the way.

Background: From Brooklyn to Broadway and Beyond

Martin Lee Erlichman was born on September 13, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, before building a career in entertainment management. The turning point came when he saw a 19-year-old Streisand performing as an opening act in a New York club. Convinced he had found a once-in-a-generation talent, he took on her management and set about building the career that followed.

That career became one of the most accomplished in entertainment history. Streisand moved from nightclub singer to Broadway performer, then to recording artist, film actor and director, and concert performer whose tours broke box-office records. Behind each stage was Erlichman’s work on the commercial side: negotiating recording, theatre, film and television deals, licensing arrangements and concert terms, and protecting the long-term value of her work.

Marty Erlichman: A Partnership Built on a Handshake

What set the Erlichman-Streisand partnership apart was not only its length but its basis. In an industry built on contracts, agents, lawyers and renegotiations, the two worked for more than 60 years on trust alone. Streisand never took another manager, and Erlichman never managed another artist in the same way. That exclusivity gave the partnership a stability few performers enjoy, and allowed long-term decisions about repertoire, touring, recordings and screen work to be made without changing representation.

The arrangement also reflected Erlichman’s approach: rather than chasing short-term gains, he built Streisand’s career step by step, from club dates to Broadway, from records to films, and from television specials to arena tours. Each move widened her audience without abandoning the previous one, so that by the time she filled arenas in the 2000s, she was drawing on fans gained in every earlier era.

Reactions and Tributes

Streisand’s Instagram tribute was the centrepiece of the first wave of reaction. “Marty can never be replaced, and I will be forever grateful for his friendship, loyalty, and unwavering support,” she wrote, in words quoted across entertainment outlets. Her family statement described him as a rock for his family as well as a giant of Hollywood.

Why It Matters

Erlichman’s death matters because his career charts how modern stardom was built. When he discovered Streisand, a singer’s path ran through clubs, Broadway, records and television in turn. Erlichman guided her through each of those worlds, and then through the arena-tour era, without ever losing control of her image or catalogue. That model — one trusted manager, one long-term plan — shaped how later artists thought about their own careers.

What Happens Next

Further tributes from colleagues, artists and industry bodies are expected in the coming days, along with details of any memorial arrangements. The family has asked for donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the National Kidney Foundation in his memory, rather than flowers.

Erlichman is survived by his wife of 52 years, Miko Mayama Erlichman, their son J.J., his daughter-in-law Talia, and four grandchildren. His family’s statement summed him up in a single line: to the world, a giant of Hollywood; to them, a deeply devoted and loving father, husband, grandfather and rock.
