Voting at Beverly Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio, was paused on Election Day after the school, serving as a polling place, received two bomb threats in a row on the morning of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, forcing law enforcement to sweep the building before voters could cast their ballots again. The threats briefly stopped voting at one of the city's polling locations, but officials declared the premises safe after the sweep, and voting resumed.

The incident was reported by USA TODAY on Tuesday afternoon, drawing on information from Toledo Public Schools. It showed how quickly a threat can interrupt voting even when no device is found and no one is hurt: the pause was temporary, the building was checked by police, and the ballot process continued once officers gave the all-clear.

Key Points

• Beverly Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio, serving as a polling location, received two bomb threats in a row on the morning of Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
• Voting was paused until law enforcement could sweep the premises and declare it safe, according to Toledo Public Schools.
• Toledo Public Schools spokesperson Patty Mazur said the first call came in around 10:30 a.m. local time, with the second arriving a few minutes later while the person who took the first call was calling police.
• Children had the day off, Mazur said, so no pupils were in the building during the incident.
• Toledo voters were deciding the hotly contested Ohio 9th Congressional District race between Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur and Republican Derek Merrin.

What Happened

The first threat arrived on Tuesday morning, when polling places across Ohio were already busy with Election Day voters. According to Toledo Public Schools spokesperson Patty Mazur, the first call came in around 10:30 a.m. local time, and the second followed only a few minutes later, while the person who had taken the first call was still calling police.

That rapid sequence turned a single alarming call into a full pause in voting. Poll workers could not carry on while the building was under threat, and law enforcement needed time to check the premises properly. Voting was therefore paused until officers had swept the school and declared it safe, allowing the polling place to reopen.

Background/Context

Schools are among the most common polling places in the United States. They are large, accessible public buildings, spread across neighbourhoods, and they can accommodate the voting machines, check-in tables and queues that Election Day requires. A threat against a school on Election Day therefore carries a double weight: it disrupts voting and it raises fears for a building associated with children.

On this occasion, that second concern was eased by the calendar. Children had the day off, according to Mazur, so the building was operating as a polling place rather than as a school full of pupils. Officers could therefore sweep a building that was not also managing classes and the movement of children.

Toledo Polling Place Bomb Threats

The Toledo polling place bomb threats stand out because they came in pairs. A single threatening call is alarming enough, but a second call minutes later, while the first was still being reported to police, suggests a deliberate attempt to disrupt the polling place rather than a single hoax call made in passing.

The school district's account gives a clear timeline: a first call around 10:30 a.m., a second call a few minutes later, a pause in voting, a police sweep, and then an all-clear. Election workers cannot verify a threat themselves, and they cannot ask voters to remain in a building that may be at risk. The only safe course is to pause, hand the building to law enforcement, and wait for officers to complete their checks.

Reactions/Quotes

Toledo Public Schools spokesperson Patty Mazur provided the key details of the incident, including the timing of the two calls and the fact that children had the day off. Her account is the basis for the timeline reported on Tuesday, and it confirms that the school district, rather than election officials alone, was the source of the first public information about the threats.

According to the report, Mazur said the first call came in around 10:30 a.m. local time and the second a few minutes later, while the person who took the first call was calling police. That detail captures how quickly the situation escalated: the second threat arrived before the first had even been fully reported.

Why It Matters

A bomb threat against a polling place strikes at the mechanics of voting itself. It does not need to involve a real device to have an effect: the threat alone is enough to close a building, delay voters and create uncertainty. When that happens on Election Day, in a contested congressional district, the effect is magnified, because every hour of voting time matters and every voter turned away is a voter who may not return.

What Happens Next

The immediate question is the investigation into who made the calls. Police will work to trace the threats, establish whether they came from the same source, and determine whether any charges follow. That work may take days or longer, and it may not produce a public update quickly, particularly if investigators are still following leads.

For election officials, the next step is to confirm that all votes cast at Beverly Elementary on Tuesday are counted and that any voter delayed by the pause was able to vote. The pause itself does not invalidate ballots already cast, and the reopening of the polling place means that voting continued through the rest of the day.
