Authorities in Oregon have released the frantic 911 call made by the father who stopped the gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. The recording, just over a minute long, captures the terror of the afternoon a 16-year-old attacker shot his way into the school and killed three children and a teacher.

Kaylub Giamanco was driving home for lunch on October 15, 2026, when he spotted the armed teenager outside the school his daughters attend. He dialled 911, told the operator there was “someone with a gun”, and warned: “I have a gun and I will shoot them right now.” Seconds later, he said the shooter was entering the building and confirmed the shooter was firing. Then the call ended.

Key Points

• Authorities released on November 3, 2026, the roughly 80-second 911 call from Kaylub Giamanco, who fatally shot the 16-year-old attacker at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon.
• Giamanco tells the dispatcher there is “someone with a gun” at his daughters’ school, warns he will shoot the gunman, then confirms the shooter is firing as he enters the building.
• The October 15, 2026, attack killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert in a special-needs classroom.
• A teacher tried to stop the shooter before Giamanco entered through an open window, opened the classroom door and fired, dropping the attacker.
• Police identified the shooter as Griffin J. John II, 16. Governor Tina Kotek praised Giamanco for likely saving lives.

What Happened

The call begins with urgency. Giamanco tells the operator there is “someone with a gun” at Silver Rail Elementary, the school his daughters attend, and makes clear he will not stand by. Moments later, he reports the shooter is entering the building. Asked whether the shooter is firing, he says yes. The dispatcher tries to draw out more detail, but the call ends before those answers come.

What happened next is public record: Giamanco went inside himself. Police say the 16-year-old shot his way through locked doors to enter the school. A teacher tried to stop him, throwing her phone at him and wrestling with him, before Giamanco entered through an open window, opened the classroom door and fired, dropping the shooter. The gunman was killed and the attack ended.

Background: The October 15 Attack at Silver Rail Elementary

On October 15, 2026, the 16-year-old former student forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, central Oregon, by firing into the glass panes of an external set of doors, police say. He reached a special-needs classroom, where he killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25. Two other people were seriously injured. The school serves more than 400 children.

Days later, Giamanco told Oregon Public Broadcasting what he had seen: a person in black firing a long gun outside the school, then climbing the fence toward the building. He took a .40-caliber handgun from his truck, called 911 and told the dispatcher: “I’m sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die.” He crawled through a shot-out window to the classroom, fired, and after both fell and the teacher ran out, shot the gunman twice more. When officers arrived, he set his gun down and raised his hands.

Police credited Giamanco and the unarmed teacher with saving lives; Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz called the teacher’s actions heroic. A day after the shootings, President Donald Trump called him a “great hero” who “took care of business.”

The Oregon School Shooting 911 Call

The newly released Oregon school shooting 911 call fills a crucial gap in the public record. Until now, the fullest accounts came from security footage, witness statements and Giamanco’s later interviews. The audio itself — breathless, fragmented, barely 80 seconds — shows how little time passed between the first sighting of the gunman and the violence inside.

It also shows the limits of what a dispatcher can do in such a moment. The operator keeps trying to hold Giamanco on the line and pin down the gunman’s location, but the caller is already moving toward the danger. The line goes dead with the most urgent questions unanswered and help still en route. Authorities have not said whether further audio will be released; the investigation remains active.

Reactions and Praise for the Father Who Intervened

Giamanco has spoken about the weight of what he did, calling himself “just a carpenter from Bend”. In his Oregon Public Broadcasting interview, he said he still thinks about the children he could not save and feels he failed their families.

Praise has been near-universal, from the governor’s office to the White House. Yet the case has reopened a difficult debate: armed civilians stopping mass shooters is rare. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported only a few dozen such cases in about 600 in the United States since 2000, and experts knew of none at a school. No charges have been detailed, and law enforcement has not said whether he faces any legal review.

Why It Matters

The release matters for three reasons. It gives the clearest timeline yet of how the attack began and how quickly it stopped. It sharpens the school-security debate: the attacker shot through locked doors, a reminder that locked entrances alone cannot stop a determined gunman, and that the minutes before police arrive can decide how many lives are lost. And it has become a focal point in the argument about armed response: supporters cite Giamanco as proof an armed adult on scene can end an attack; critics call his case exceptional.

What Happens Next

The investigation remains active, and authorities say no further information will be released while it continues. It is not yet known whether the Deschutes County District Attorney will formally review Giamanco’s actions, or whether further recordings or security footage will be made public. For Silver Rail and Bend, the release reopens wounds barely three weeks old.
