CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel has died aged 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following an on-field collision during a Spanish second-division match, the club announced on Tuesday morning, in a tragedy that has stunned Spanish football. Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for the Canary Islands club, was hurt late in Monday's LaLiga 2 game against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and died at hospital at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after his condition deteriorated overnight.

Key Points

• Jesús de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, after a cardiac arrest suffered during CD Tenerife's LaLiga 2 match against FC Andorra on Monday.
• The striker was struck in the chest by the knee of Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono as both chased a loose ball near midfield in added time, with the match tied 2-2.
• Medics treated de Miguel on the pitch, the match was abandoned, and he was taken to intensive care, where he was unable to breathe unassisted before his condition worsened overnight.
• Spain's National Police opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, although prosecutors indicated criminal proceedings were unlikely because the collision happened during play.
• The Spanish Football Federation suspended all soccer-related activities scheduled for Tuesday, and UEFA said matches this week would feature moments of silence.

What Happened

The match was in added time on Monday evening, with the score tied at 2-2, when the incident happened. De Miguel, who had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute with Tenerife leading 2-0, chased a loose ball near the halfway line. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono had come far out of his goal to clear the ball, and his knee struck de Miguel in the chest as the two players converged.

Play stopped immediately. De Miguel was treated on the field before the match was abandoned. He was taken to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, admitted to intensive care unable to breathe unassisted, and his neurological condition deteriorated overnight.

On Tuesday morning, CD Tenerife announced that de Miguel had died at 8:00 a.m. The club did not release further medical details. The announcement ended a night of anxious waiting for his family, his teammates and supporters, many of whom had followed updates through the night hoping for better news. Owono was shown a straight red card for excessive force at the time of the incident, although authorities have not presented the dismissal as a judgment on intent: football is a contact sport, and collisions between an outfield player and a goalkeeper rushing from his line are among its recognised risks.

Background and Context

De Miguel, whose full name was Jesús de Miguel Alameda, was a forward with CD Tenerife, a club based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands that plays in LaLiga 2, Spain's second tier. The match against FC Andorra, the club from the tiny Pyrenean principality, had followed a dramatic course even before its tragic end: Tenerife had led 2-0 when de Miguel entered the game in the 59th minute, only for Andorra to fight back to 2-2 by added time.

The Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, Tenerife's home ground, is one of the most recognisable stadiums in the Spanish second division, and Monday's fixture was an ordinary league evening until its final moments. That ordinariness is part of why the news has resonated so widely: only a loose ball, two players committed to reaching it, and a collision with devastating consequences.

Jesús de Miguel: A Striker Remembered by His Club

De Miguel was 30 years old, an age at which a professional footballer is typically in his prime. His introduction as a substitute on Monday, with his side protecting a 2-0 lead, was a routine tactical decision. Instead, his final appearance became the defining moment of a career cut short.

For CD Tenerife, the loss goes beyond a squad member. A football club is a small, tight-knit workplace, and the death of a colleague in the course of his work is a trauma that affects players, coaches, medical staff and backroom employees alike. The club's announcement on Tuesday morning was brief and factual, as such statements usually are, but its impact was immediate across Spanish football, where clubs, players and supporters responded with messages of condolence.

Reactions and Official Response

CD Tenerife announced de Miguel's death on Tuesday morning, confirming the time of death as 8:00 a.m. and the hospital where he had been treated. The Spanish Football Federation suspended all soccer-related activities scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, including two Copa del Rey matches — a mark of respect and a recognition that, on a day like this, the normal business of the sport could not simply continue as if nothing had happened.

Spain's National Police opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, standard under Spanish law for a non-natural death and not by itself implying anyone is suspected of wrongdoing. The chief prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife told EFE that criminal proceedings were unlikely because the collision occurred during play.

Why It Matters

The death of a professional footballer during a match is one of the rarest and most shocking events in sport. It is a reminder that, for all the money and spectacle of modern football, players are exposed to real physical risk every time they compete for a loose ball.

It also matters because of how football responds: the federation's suspension of activities, UEFA's moments of silence and the abandonment of the match show a sport willing to stop in the face of a death on the pitch. For Tenerife, the coming weeks will be about supporting de Miguel's family and teammates. What Happens Next

The police investigation will continue as a routine matter. Spanish football authorities will decide how the abandoned match is recorded, and Tenerife will announce funeral and memorial arrangements in due course.
