Democratic Representative Morgan McGarvey has held Kentucky's 3rd District and Republican Representative Hal Rogers has won a 24th term in Kentucky's 5th District, in two of the first House results called on election night, Tuesday 3 November 2026. The Kentucky House election results came shortly after polls closed, with NBC News and the Associated Press calling both races at about 7 p.m. Eastern Time, while control of Congress remained undecided as counting continued.

McGarvey, the Democratic incumbent, held off Republican challenger Maria Rodriguez in the 3rd District, with 76 percent of the vote in unofficial results when the race was called just after 7 p.m. ET. Rogers, the longest-serving current member of the United States House of Representatives, defeated Democratic nominee Ned Pillersdorf in the 5th District, with about 67 percent of the vote at the time of the call. The Associated Press also called a Democratic hold in Florida's 10th District the same evening. All three are safe-seat holds, not flips, so none changes the House balance on its own.

Key Points

• Democrat Morgan McGarvey retained Kentucky's 3rd District, beating Republican Maria Rodriguez with 76 percent of the vote when the race was called just after 7 p.m. ET.
• Republican Hal Rogers, the longest-serving current House member, won a 24th term in Kentucky's 5th District, beating Democrat Ned Pillersdorf with about 67 percent at the time of the call.
• NBC News and the Associated Press called both Kentucky races at about 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday 3 November 2026, among election night's first House calls.
• The AP also called a Democratic hold in Florida's 10th District the same evening.
• Both Kentucky results are safe-seat holds, not flips, so they do not change the House balance, with control of Congress still undecided.

What Happened

The first House calls came quickly. Shortly after polls closed, the major decision desks moved almost in step: NBC and the AP called the 3rd District for McGarvey just after 7 p.m. ET, and the 5th District for Rogers at about the same time. The speed reflected the shape of both races, with the leaders holding wide margins in the unofficial returns available early in the evening.

In the 3rd District, McGarvey's 76 percent left little doubt about the outcome even with counting still under way. In the 5th, Rogers' margin of about 67 percent over Pillersdorf was a reminder of how durable his support has proved over more than four decades in the House. Rogers first entered Congress in the early 1980s, and his longevity has made him the chamber's longest-serving current member.

Background and Context

Kentucky's House delegation has long been dominated by Republicans, with the 3rd District standing out as the state's Democratic-held seat. McGarvey's hold matters to his party's defensive map: losing such a seat would have been an early warning sign of a difficult night for Democrats. Holding it by a wide margin removed that worry at the start of the evening.

Rogers, by contrast, holds one of the safest Republican seats in the country, and his re-election was widely expected. His tenure spans presidencies and majorities of both parties, and his seniority has given him a central role in House spending decisions for many years. A 24th term extends a career that began when Ronald Reagan was in the White House.

These calls are projections, not final certified results. News organisations call a race when the remaining uncounted votes cannot plausibly change the outcome, based on the counted vote, the expected remaining vote and the district's history. The wider context was a House neither party could afford to lose ground in: Democrats entered the evening needing only a net gain of a handful of seats to retake the majority, so competitive districts mattered far more than safe seats like these two.

Kentucky House Election Results: What the Early Calls Show

The Kentucky House election results show the difference between the first results of an election night and the results that decide it. The earliest calls almost always come from the safest seats, because wide margins let decision desks project winners confidently while counting is still early. Competitive races, with narrow margins and many mail and early votes still to count, take much longer, and they decide control.

That pattern was visible on Tuesday night. The Kentucky calls and the Florida hold arrived within the first hour of results, while the contested districts that will decide the House majority were still reporting first returns. Observers read the early calls as confirmation that the expected map was holding in safe territory, not as evidence about the battleground races.

Reactions and Quotes

Reaction to the early calls was mostly a matter of record. The NBC and AP decision desks moved within minutes of each other on both races, and the calls went out in live coverage as the night's first House results. As safe-seat holds, neither surprised; attention quickly moved to the competitive races. They did not answer the night's central question: which party will control the House.

Why It Matters

Locally, the results confirm the stability of Kentucky's House representation. McGarvey's hold keeps the state's Democratic seat in Democratic hands, and Rogers' 24th term extends one of the longest continuous careers in modern congressional history.

Nationally, the results matter because of what they do not change. A night whose first calls are all holds is a night whose majority is decided later, in fewer and more competitive places. In a closely divided House, a handful of districts carries weight far beyond its number. Seniority matters too: Rogers' standing gives him influence beyond one vote, especially on spending.

What Happens Next

Unofficial results will be updated as remaining ballots are tallied, and state authorities will certify final figures in the days and weeks ahead. The winners take their seats when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. The larger question, control of the House, will be settled by the competitive districts still counting: whether Democrats gain the handful of net seats they need, or Republicans hold the chamber. Those results, not the early Kentucky calls, will define the next two years.
