COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Democrat Annie Andrews has won South Carolina's United States Senate seat, defeating Republican incumbent Darline Graham in one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 midterm elections. The Annie Andrews South Carolina Senate victory, projected on election night on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ends 28 years of Republican control of the seat and gives Democrats a prized flip in a state that President Donald Trump carried by about 18 points in 2024. Andrews, a 45-year-old paediatrician from Charleston, becomes the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in South Carolina since 1998 and the first woman ever elected to the United States Senate from South Carolina.

What Happened

The race was called quickly by election-night standards. Decision Desk HQ and NBC News both projected Andrews as the winner just after 10 p.m. Eastern Time, less than three hours after polls closed in South Carolina. NBC's call came at about 9:59 p.m., when Andrews led 51% to 46.8%. At 10 p.m., with 77.51% of precincts reporting, the count stood at 908,803 votes for Andrews and 830,750 for Graham, a lead of more than 78,000 votes that left little doubt about the outcome.

The speed of the call was itself a measure of the upset. South Carolina had not been considered a competitive Senate race for most of the campaign. It tightened only in recent weeks, when final polls showed the contest tied, and even then many observers treated it as a long shot for Democrats in a deeply Republican state. Election night proved otherwise, as Andrews built her lead in the state's population centres and held her own elsewhere.

Background and Context

The seat carries an unusual recent history. Graham was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster after her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, died suddenly on July 11, 2026, at the age of 71. She then won a special primary runoff against Representative Ralph Norman, with President Donald Trump's endorsement, to become the Republican nominee. That gave her the backing of the party establishment, but also meant she had served only a short time in the Senate before facing voters.

Andrews brought a very different profile to the race. A paediatrician from Charleston, she campaigned as a health-care professional who understood the system from the inside, and she made restoring Medicaid cuts a central plank of her platform. During a debate, Graham fumbled when she said that "national security is not my thing", a remark that drew wide attention and became a shorthand for criticism of her readiness for the Senate.

Annie Andrews South Carolina Senate Win: What It Means

The Annie Andrews South Carolina Senate win matters for the balance of power in Washington as well as for the state itself. With Roy Cooper's victory in North Carolina, the result gives Democrats two of the net four Senate seats they needed to overturn the Republicans' 53-47 majority. Each flip narrowed the Republican margin, and the South Carolina result, in a state few had counted as winnable, showed that Democratic gains on election night were broader than pre-election forecasts had suggested.

Reactions

Early reaction reflected the scale of the surprise. The projection, less than three hours after polls closed, was the clearest signal that the race had moved decisively in Andrews's favour, and national attention quickly turned to what the result meant for the overall Senate map, where Democrats were picking up seats in states that had seemed out of reach.

Graham's lack of a concession as of the Greenville News report left one loose end on election night. In most Senate races, the losing candidate concedes once the major projection services have called the race, and the absence of such a statement was noted in the early coverage. No reason was given in the reports for the delay.

Why It Matters

The result matters because it changes the arithmetic of the Senate and the assumptions behind it. A Democratic win in South Carolina, a state Trump won by about 18 points two years earlier, demonstrates that the 2026 midterm environment favoured Democrats more broadly than many forecasts allowed. It also gives Democrats a Senate voice from a Deep South state, a position the party has not held in South Carolina for nearly three decades.

It matters, too, for the next two years of governing. A Senate with a narrower Republican majority, or a Democratic majority if the remaining flips fall the same way, would change the prospects for legislation on health care and affordability. Even a single seat can decide whether a bill advances, whether a nomination is confirmed, and whether a committee can pursue oversight.

What Happens Next

The next steps are counting, certification and transition. The remaining precincts will be counted and the result certified by South Carolina election officials, a process that will confirm the final margin but is not expected to change the outcome given the size of Andrews's lead at the time of the call. Graham may yet concede, as is customary once a race has been called.

Andrews will then prepare to take her seat in the Senate, where she will join the Democratic caucus and take up committee assignments for the new Congress. Her first months are likely to focus on the issues she campaigned on, above all health care and affordability. The broader Senate picture will become clearer as the remaining races are called.
