Deb Haaland has won the New Mexico governor's race, becoming the first Native American woman ever elected governor of a US state. The Associated Press called the race for the Democrat at about 10:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, or 8:40 p.m. local time, with early returns putting Haaland on about 57 percent of the vote to about 43 percent for Republican Gregg Hull. Haaland, 65, a citizen of Laguna Pueblo and the former US interior secretary, will become New Mexico's 33rd governor when she takes office in January 2027, succeeding term-limited Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The result is a landmark in American political history. Haaland will also be the first Pueblo citizen to govern modern New Mexico, and she will serve alongside Lieutenant Governor Stephanie Garcia Richard as the state's first all-female elected executive team, becoming New Mexico's third straight woman governor. Haaland spent election day campaigning in Santo Domingo Pueblo, the Navajo Nation and her home community of Laguna, a final tour of the Native communities at the heart of her life and career.

What Happened

New Mexico voters delivered a clear verdict on Tuesday night. As results flowed in after polls closed, Haaland built a commanding lead that the Associated Press was able to call relatively early in the evening. Buffalo's Fire, the Native news outlet, reported Haaland on about 57 percent of the vote to Hull's 43 percent at the time of the call, a margin of roughly 14 points that left little doubt about the outcome even as counting continued in parts of the state.

Haaland, addressing supporters after the call, said: "It is the honor of my lifetime to be elected your 33rd Governor." The line drew a roar from the crowd at her election-night event and captured the scale of the moment for a candidate whose career has repeatedly broken new ground. First elected to Congress in 2018, Haaland went on to serve as interior secretary before returning home to seek the governorship. Her opponent, Gregg Hull, had campaigned as an alternative to more than a decade of Democratic control in Santa Fe, but voters chose continuity with a historic twist.

Background and Context

Haaland's path to the governor's office runs through some of the most significant chapters of recent Native American political history. Born in Winslow, Arizona, and raised in a military family, she is an enrolled citizen of Laguna Pueblo, one of New Mexico's 19 Pueblo communities. She worked her way through law school as a single mother, later chaired the New Mexico Democratic Party, and won a seat in Congress in 2018 alongside Sharice Davids of Kansas, the first two Native American women ever elected to the House.

In Congress, Haaland built a record on public lands, climate, tribal sovereignty and voting rights. President Joe Biden then chose her as interior secretary, a post that put her in charge of the department managing vast swathes of federal land across the West, including much of New Mexico, and historically overseeing federal Indian policy. Her confirmation in 2021 made her the first Native American Cabinet secretary. Her return to New Mexico politics came as Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, first elected in 2018, approached the end of her second and final consecutive term, opening a race Haaland entered as the best-known Democrat in the field.

Deb Haaland's Historic Win

The historic character of Haaland's win cannot be overstated. Native Americans have served as governors before, but only in a handful of cases, and never has a Native woman been elected to a governorship. Haaland's victory therefore breaks a barrier that has stood since the founding of the republic, and it does so in a state where Native people make up a large and politically active share of the population. New Mexico is home to 23 federally recognised tribes, including 19 Pueblos, the Navajo Nation and the Jicarilla and Mescalero Apache Nations, and tribal voters have long been a decisive force in close statewide races.

Reactions and Quotes

Haaland's own words on election night set the tone for the celebrations that followed. "It is the honor of my lifetime to be elected your 33rd Governor," she said, a statement supporters quickly shared across social media alongside photographs from her campaign stops in Pueblo communities. The message was deliberately simple and forward-looking: an acknowledgement of history made, and a promise of service to come.

Why It Matters

Haaland's victory matters for three reasons. First, it changes who can plausibly aspire to a governorship in America: a barrier that had never been broken has now been broken, and future Native candidates, particularly Native women, will campaign in a landscape Haaland has altered. Second, it matters for New Mexico itself, where a governor with deep roots in tribal communities and a record at the Interior Department will bring a distinctive perspective to questions of land, water, energy and tribal-state relations that dominate the state's politics.

What Happens Next

Haaland will take office in January 2027, and the weeks between now and inauguration will be dominated by transition work. She will name a transition team, begin assembling a Cabinet and senior staff, and open talks with the New Mexico Legislature, which will shape what she can deliver in her first session. Her relationship with lawmakers, including on the budget, will be one of the first tests of her governorship.
