DES MOINES, Iowa — Democrats swept all three contested Iowa House seats on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, turning a state that entered Election Day with an all-Republican congressional delegation into a symbol of the party's midterm surge. In the Iowa House seats 2026 results, Christina Bohannan, Lindsay James and Sarah Trone Garriott all won, leaving Republicans with only one of Iowa's four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The three victories, called late on election night, helped push Democrats toward a House majority nationally.

Key Points

• Democrat Christina Bohannan defeated Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa's 1st District, winning on her third attempt after losing by fewer than 800 votes in 2024.
• Democrat Lindsay James won the open 2nd District seat, beating Republican Joe Mitchell in the race to succeed Ashley Hinson, who ran for the Senate instead.
• Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott unseated Republican Rep. Zach Nunn in the 3rd District, winning by roughly 26,000 votes.
• The three wins left Republicans holding only Iowa's 4th District, a dramatic reversal in a state that was solidly Republican before the election.
• The Iowa results formed part of a wider Democratic midterm wave that also delivered the party the Senate.

What Happened

In the 1st District, Decision Desk HQ projected Bohannan's win at 10:17 p.m. on election night, with the Democrat ahead 165,237 votes to 131,832 for Miller-Meeks and 17 of the district's 20 counties reporting. It was a long-awaited breakthrough for Bohannan, who had twice fallen short against Miller-Meeks, most painfully in 2024, when fewer than 800 votes separated the two candidates. Fuller counts later widened her margin to about 53.6 percent against Miller-Meeks' 42.8 percent.

In the open 2nd District, state Rep. Lindsay James defeated former state Rep. Joe Mitchell 171,484 to 157,722, with all counties reporting. The seat had been vacated by Republican Ashley Hinson, who gave it up to run for the U.S. Senate, and it was among Democrats' top pickup opportunities nationally. James ran a campaign focused on affordability and health care.

In the 3rd District, state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott unseated Rep. Zach Nunn 180,355 to 154,573, with 19 of 21 counties reporting. Vote Hub projected the race at 10:11 p.m., and NBC News and Decision Desk HQ followed at 10:40 p.m., putting Trone Garriott at about 55 percent to 45 percent. Later counts put her at about 54.6 percent to Nunn's 45.4 percent. Trone Garriott had campaigned heavily on ending tariffs, restoring health care funding and opposing the war with Iran.

Background/Context

Iowa's transformation has been one of the sharpest political shifts in the country. The state voted twice for Barack Obama, then swung hard to Donald Trump, who carried it by comfortable margins in 2016, 2020 and 2024. Republicans built an all-Republican congressional delegation and held both Senate seats, the governor's office and both chambers of the state legislature.

Yet the 2026 campaign exposed cracks in that dominance. Voters repeatedly said rising costs were their top concern, and Democratic challengers in all three districts made affordability the centre of their campaigns. The war with Iran, now in its ninth month, and the tariffs imposed during it also weighed on voters in an agricultural state deeply exposed to export markets, while health care funding cuts gave Democrats a potent line of attack.

Iowa House Seats 2026: How Each Race Was Won

The 1st District result was the most personal of the three. Bohannan's two previous defeats had made her a symbol of Democratic frustration in Iowa, and her narrow 2024 loss left supporters convinced the seat was winnable. This time the margin was not in doubt.

The 2nd District was the only open seat of the three, and both parties treated it as a must-win. Hinson's decision to run for the Senate freed a seat Republicans had held, but the district had always been more competitive than the statewide Republican lean suggested.

The 3rd District, centred on Des Moines and its fast-growing suburbs, produced the largest raw margin of the night. Trone Garriott's 180,355 votes to Nunn's 154,573 reflected the suburbs' continued drift toward Democrats, a trend visible across the country in 2026. Together, the three results mean Iowa will send three Democrats and one Republican to the House in January, with Rep. Chris McGowan winning the conservative 4th District in the northwest for the first time.

Reactions

The results were greeted nationally as one of the clearest signs of the scale of the Democratic wave. Commentators noted that Iowa, once written off by national Democrats as unwinnable, had delivered three seats in a single night. Within Iowa, the outcome reshapes the state's politics overnight: Democrats now hold a majority of the House delegation for the first time in years, and the wins sit alongside other Democratic successes in Iowa on the same night, including the party's victory in the state's open Senate race.

For Republicans, the night was sobering. The party entered the election holding all four Iowa House seats and left with one, a reversal that will prompt difficult questions about the campaign's closing message.

Why It Matters

The Iowa sweep matters for three reasons. First, it contributed directly to the national battle for the House: Democrats needed a net gain of only a handful of seats to win the majority, and Iowa alone supplied three. Second, it signals a realignment in the Midwest, suggesting the affordability message cut through where Democrats had struggled for a decade. Third, the new members arrive with immediate leverage, since a narrow Democratic majority means every member matters.

What Happens Next

The three winners will take office in January 2027, when the 120th Congress convenes, and will build staffs and seek committee assignments as they move from campaigning to governing. Attention will also turn to whether the 2026 results reflect a durable shift or a midterm protest vote, a question the winners must answer when they defend their seats in 2028.
