Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar won a fifth term in Minnesota's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, securing re-election in the Minneapolis-area seat she has held since 2019 and extending one of the most closely watched House careers in American politics. USA TODAY reported the win at 12:13 a.m. ET on November 4, and the Associated Press called the race, with its figures showing Omar on 260,713 votes when 99.08% of precincts had reported. She defeated Republican John Nagel, with independent DeVelle Jackson also on the ballot, in a contest that unfolded against the backdrop of a federal investigation into alleged immigration fraud that Omar denies.

What Happened

The result was reported in the early hours of Wednesday, after Minnesota voters had cast ballots throughout election day on Tuesday. USA TODAY logged the win at 12:13 a.m. ET on November 4, a timing that reflected the late counting of returns from a district centred on Minneapolis, the state's largest city. The Associated Press, whose race calls are widely used as the standard for election-night results, also called the race for Omar.

The Associated Press figures cited in election coverage showed Omar with 260,713 votes at 99.08% of precincts reporting. That near-complete count left little doubt about the outcome, even though a small share of precincts had yet to report when the figures were published. The figures describe the scale of Omar's support in a district that has returned her to Congress in every election since her first victory.

Omar defeated Republican John Nagel, who challenged her for the seat, while independent DeVelle Jackson also appeared on the ballot. The presence of a third candidate did not prevent a clear result, and the reporting of the win in the first hours after midnight placed Omar among the early confirmed winners from Minnesota's congressional delegation on a night when Democrats were also celebrating major victories elsewhere in the state.

Background/Context

Omar was first elected to Congress in 2018, when she became the first Somali-American member of Congress, a milestone that drew national and international attention. Born in Somalia, she came to the United States as a refugee and later entered Minnesota politics, serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives before her election to the U.S. House. Her rise reflected the changing demographics and politics of Minneapolis, a city with a large Somali-American community and a long tradition of progressive politics.

Since arriving in Washington, Omar has become one of the most prominent members of the House Democratic caucus and a frequent target of criticism from Republican opponents, including President Donald Trump. She has built a national profile on issues including immigration, foreign policy, housing and social spending, and she has repeatedly drawn large fundraising totals and intense media coverage that far exceed what is typical for a safe-seat House member.

Ilhan Omar Fifth Term: What the Win Means for Minnesota

A fifth term gives Omar another two years in the House at a moment of major change in Washington. Democrats won control of the House in the 2026 midterms, according to projections reported on election night, which means Omar will return to Congress as part of a new majority rather than as a member of the minority. That shift could affect committee assignments, the legislation that reaches the floor and the leverage available to members who have spent recent years in opposition.

Within the 5th District itself, a fifth term consolidates Omar's position as the district's long-serving representative. Eight years after her first election, she is no longer a newcomer but a senior figure in Minnesota's delegation, with a national fundraising network, a prominent voice in House debates and a constituency that has now endorsed her through five consecutive elections.

Reactions/Quotes

Election-night reporting did not carry a concession statement from Nagel or a victory statement from Omar in the sources used for this article, and this report does not invent one. The central fact reported by USA TODAY and the Associated Press is the result itself: Omar won, with 260,713 votes at 99.08% of precincts reporting, and she will serve a fifth term.

On the investigation, the position attributed to Omar in the reporting is clear: she denies the allegations of immigration fraud that USA TODAY described as the subject of a potentially high-stakes federal investigation. No further detail about the investigation was included in the election-night call, and any future development in that matter would be a separate story from the election result itself.

Why It Matters

Omar's fifth term matters for three reasons. First, it confirms the durability of her support in Minneapolis and its suburbs, where voters have now backed her in five straight elections despite sustained national controversy. Second, it returns a high-profile progressive voice to a House that is changing hands, at a time when the new majority will set the agenda on spending, immigration and oversight. Third, it keeps the immigration-fraud investigation in the public eye, because a re-elected member facing such scrutiny will inevitably draw continued attention to how that matter develops.

The result also illustrates how House elections in safe districts can still carry national significance. Omar is not a swing-district member whose seat decides control of the chamber, but her profile means her re-election is read nationally as a signal about the direction of the Democratic Party, about voter attitudes in a major Midwestern city and about the staying power of a politician who has been at the centre of American political debate since 2018.

What Happens Next

Omar will take her seat in the new Congress in January 2027, alongside the other winners from the 2026 midterms. The new House, with Democrats projected to hold the majority, will elect its leadership, organise committees and begin work on the agenda that the new majority sets out in its first weeks.
