MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Republican Tommy Tuberville has won Alabama's governor race, defeating Democrat Doug Jones and moving from the United States Senate to the governor's office in one of the most watched contests of the 2026 midterm elections. Decision Desk HQ marked the race decided at 11:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with 92% reported, showing Tuberville on 837,206 votes (52.70%) to Jones's 751,307 (47.30%).

Tuberville, the sitting senator and former college football coach, declared victory at around 11 p.m. ET, before major outlets had called the race. Jones refused to concede, pointing to uncounted votes in Democratic strongholds. The Associated Press still listed the race as too early to call at the initial check, a reminder that projections and formal certification are not the same thing.

The result keeps the governor's office in Republican hands. Tuberville succeeds term-limited Republican Governor Kay Ivey, and no Democrat has held Alabama's governor's office since 1998. The same night, Republican Representative Barry Moore won Tuberville's Senate seat, declared the winner by the Associated Press at 11:17 p.m. ET over Democrat Everett Wess.

What Happened

Alabama voted on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as part of nationwide midterms deciding governorships, Senate seats and control of Congress. The governor's race featured two well-known figures: a sitting senator seeking state office, and a former senator trying to return to statewide office.

As results arrived, Tuberville built a lead of just under 86,000 votes, about 5.4 points, which Decision Desk HQ judged decisive at 11:10 p.m. ET. He declared victory shortly before that call. Jones did not accept the outcome that night, arguing that votes remained uncounted in Democratic areas, where later returns could narrow the margin even if they did not erase it.

Background and Context

Tuberville came to the race from the Senate, where he served as Alabama's senator before seeking the statehouse. Before politics he was a college football coach, a background that made him familiar across Alabama long before his first Senate campaign.

Jones is also a former senator, having represented Alabama in Washington before losing his seat. His candidacy gave Democrats a nationally known standard-bearer in a state where the party has struggled statewide for a generation. Recent contests have generally favoured Republicans comfortably, which made his task steep from the start.

Ivey could not seek another term because of term limits, so her departure opened the race. Tuberville's win is therefore continuity in party terms — a Republican succeeding a Republican — alongside a change of leadership, as a new governor brings his own team and agenda to Montgomery. Nationally, Democrats gained ground on election night, but Alabama moved the other way at the top of its ballot.

Tommy Tuberville Alabama Governor Race: What the Win Means

The Tommy Tuberville Alabama governor race answers a question that hung over Alabama politics for months: would voters follow a sitting senator who gave up a safe federal seat to run for governor? On election night, they did. His name recognition, built first in football and then in the Senate, translated into a statewide win, and his 52.70% share gave him a clear, if not overwhelming, mandate.

For Alabama Republicans, the result also solves a succession problem in two offices at once. Tuberville's win creates a Senate vacancy, but it was filled on the same ballot by Moore, keeping the seat Republican without a separate special election. The party thus holds both the governor's office and the Senate seat, even as it lost ground nationally.

Reactions

Tuberville's early declaration set the tone on the Republican side, with his campaign treating the Decision Desk HQ call minutes later as confirmation. Claiming victory before major outlets had called the race reflected confidence in the numbers coming in from across the state.

Jones's refusal to concede struck a different note. By pointing to uncounted votes, he signalled that his campaign wanted every ballot counted before accepting the outcome. That position does not dispute the reported totals; it argues the count was incomplete when Tuberville claimed victory. Late ballots can narrow a lead even when they do not change the winner.

Why It Matters

Alabama's governor controls the executive branch of a state of more than five million people, overseeing agencies, the budget, education, economic development and emergency response. The office shapes daily life in ways federal elections do not, from roads and schools to health care and public safety.

Tuberville arrives with Washington contacts and a national profile, but also a learning curve in state administration. How he builds his cabinet, works with the Republican-dominated legislature and handles his first budget will define his governorship more than his election-night margin. Moore's win, meanwhile, keeps Alabama's Senate delegation Republican and avoids a vacancy, although Democrats projected to control Congress will leave Alabama's senators in the minority.

What Happens Next

First, vote counting must finish and results must be formally certified. Alabama counties will canvass their returns and confirm final totals, including the final margin between Tuberville and Jones. Until then the result remains a projection, albeit a firm one backed by a lead of nearly 86,000 votes.

Attention will then turn to transition. Tuberville will assemble a team, prepare his agenda and work with Ivey's administration on the handover. Moore will prepare to take up the Senate seat in Washington, linking the two victories: one man's move to Montgomery creates the other's opportunity in the Senate.

Longer term, Tuberville will be judged on results in Alabama: jobs, schools, health care, infrastructure and state finances. Election-night victories fade quickly; governing records do not. His first months in Montgomery, and his first dealings with the legislature, will show whether the senator-turned-governor can turn a national profile into state-level achievement.
