US stock futures slide in early trading on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as investors reacted to a confirmed Democratic sweep in the midterm elections. Decision Desk HQ projected that Democrats would win both houses of Congress. Futures tied to the main American indices fell, the dollar weakened, bond yields dropped, and markets across Asia opened sharply lower. The move changed the mood from the previous session.

The sell-off was broad rather than confined to one sector. Technology shares, already under pressure over doubts about how quickly heavy spending on artificial intelligence will turn into profit, were again in focus. For many investors, the central question was no longer who would win, but what a Democratic-controlled Congress would mean for regulation, taxes, spending and technology in the months ahead.

Key Points

• S&P 500 futures were down about 0.6% to 1.06%, while Nasdaq 100 futures fell about 0.8% to 1.9%.
• Japan's Nikkei fell about 3% to 3.5% and South Korea's Kospi dropped about 1.6% to 3.6%.
• The dollar weakened against all Group-of-10 peers, and the 10-year Treasury yield fell to about 4.89% to 4.96%.

What Happened

United States trading had not yet opened for the regular session when the scale of the overnight move became clear. Futures contracts, which allow investors to trade on where indices are expected to open, pointed lower for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100. Reports varied slightly on the exact size of the fall, reflecting different measurement times in a fast-moving session, but the direction was consistent. The dollar also weakened against every other currency in the Group of 10 major economies, while the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to about 4.89% to 4.96%, its lowest in nearly two months.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell about 3% to 3.5%, South Korea's Kospi fell about 1.6% to 3.6%, and the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan fell about 0.5% to 1%. Prediction markets had priced a roughly 99% chance of a Democratic win in the House, so the broad result was not a complete surprise. Even so, confirmation of a sweep of both chambers, rather than a split Congress, appeared to sharpen the reaction, because it raised the prospect of a more unified Democratic legislative agenda.

Background/Context

The midterms of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, decided control of all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats, along with many governorships and state offices. They took place against a difficult economic backdrop, with the cost of living, fuel prices and the long-running war involving the United States and Iran among the issues shaping the campaign. Markets had already been unsettled before the vote: on November 3, global markets fell as technology stocks extended a retreat over doubts about artificial intelligence spending. That earlier fall reflected doubts about earnings and valuations, whereas the November 4 move was driven directly by the confirmed election result and its policy implications.

US Stock Futures Slide: What the Numbers Show

The numbers tell the story in stages. First, American futures: the S&P 500 down about 0.6% to 1.06% and the Nasdaq 100 down about 0.8% to 1.9%. The larger Nasdaq fall pointed to particular pressure on technology shares, which carry a heavy weight in that index and which investors often sell first when uncertainty rises. Second, Asia: the Nikkei down about 3% to 3.5% and the Kospi down about 1.6% to 3.6%, showing weakness was not limited to Japan. Third, currencies and bonds: a weaker dollar and a lower 10-year yield, a combination that often accompanies a shift towards caution. Fourth, Bitcoin, down about 0.6% to 0.7% to around $77,314, smaller than some Asian falls but matching the wider move away from risk.

Reactions/Quotes

No single statement explained the whole move. Instead, reporting pointed to shared investor concerns, above all fears of tighter regulation and closer scrutiny of technology and artificial intelligence companies under Democratic control of Congress. That matters because large technology firms have driven much of the market's recent gains, and any regulatory change could affect their earnings outlook. Treasury bonds benefited from a different argument: some investors expected a Democratic Congress, working with a Republican president, to limit large tax cuts and new spending, which could support bond prices and push yields lower. Political reaction continued too, with President Donald Trump having already blamed Fox News for Republican losses on election night.

Why It Matters

The slide shows how quickly politics can reshape market expectations. A change in control of Congress does not change a company's sales or profits overnight, but it does change the rules under which companies operate, the taxes they may pay, and the spending the government may approve. Investors therefore reprice shares as soon as they believe the policy outlook has shifted. It also matters for savers, whose funds often hold broad indices. Before the election, some traders had positioned for divided government; a Democratic sweep forces a reassessment of sectors most exposed to regulation, including technology, health care and energy.

What Happens Next

The next test comes when American markets open for regular trading. Futures point lower, but they do not guarantee where shares will finish the day. Traders will watch whether early weakness holds, deepens, or fades as investors buy shares they consider cheap after the overnight fall. Attention will then turn to what Democratic leaders say about their priorities and how the White House responds. Early signals on technology regulation, tax policy, spending or the Iran war could move markets again, while economic data and earnings will show whether the economy itself is weakening or whether this is mainly a political repricing. Asia's next session and the dollar's direction will also be watched closely.
