CONCORD, New Hampshire — Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte has won re-election in New Hampshire, securing a second two-year term after defeating Democrat Cinde Warmington in the 2026 midterm elections. The Kelly Ayotte re-election result stood out on a night that otherwise favoured Democrats nationally. Fox News projected the win at 11:06 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and the Associated Press called the race in the early hours of Wednesday, November 4.

Ayotte held a state that former Vice President Kamala Harris carried in the 2024 presidential election. She was one of only two Republican governors on the ballot in Harris-carried states, which made her survival one of the night's most notable Republican results. For New Hampshire voters, the outcome also preserves the state's unusual two-year cycle for its chief executive, a rhythm it shares only with Vermont.

• Republican Kelly Ayotte won a second two-year term as New Hampshire governor on November 3, 2026.
• She defeated Democrat Cinde Warmington, a former member of the state Executive Council.
• Fox News projected the win at 11:06 p.m. ET Tuesday; the Associated Press called it early Wednesday.
• Decision Desk HQ showed Ayotte at 50.97 percent to Warmington's 47.53 percent with 87 percent reporting.
• Ayotte was one of only two Republican governors on the ballot in states Kamala Harris carried in 2024.

What Happened

New Hampshire voters went to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, as part of the nationwide midterm elections, and the governor's race was among the most closely watched contests in New England. Ayotte, the incumbent, faced Warmington, a Democrat who had previously served on New Hampshire's Executive Council, the five-member body that shares executive authority with the governor.

Fox News was first among the major outlets cited in early reporting to project the race, calling it for Ayotte at 11:06 p.m. ET on Tuesday night. The Associated Press followed early on Wednesday, confirming the result as counting continued. At that stage, Associated Press figures showed Ayotte with 297,741 votes and 84.59 percent of precincts reporting, a snapshot of a count still under way rather than a final certified total.

Decision Desk HQ offered a slightly different window on the same count, showing Ayotte with 280,849 votes, or 50.97 percent, to Warmington's 261,906 votes, or 47.53 percent, with 87 percent reporting. The difference reflects different reporting cut-offs, not a dispute about the outcome. Both tallies pointed the same way: a clear but competitive win for the incumbent in a state known for close, ticket-splitting elections.

Background and Context

Kelly Ayotte's path to the governor's office is one of the more varied in American state politics. Before becoming governor, she served as New Hampshire's attorney general and then as a United States senator for a single term. She was first elected governor in 2024 and took office in January 2025, returning to Concord after her years in federal office.

New Hampshire and Vermont are the only states that elect their governors every two years rather than every four. Ayotte therefore faced voters again barely two years after first winning the office, and her second term will also be comparatively short, with another election due in 2028 unless she chooses not to seek it. The short cycle keeps New Hampshire governors unusually accountable, but it also means they are almost always campaigning.

Kelly Ayotte Re-Election: What the Result Means

The Kelly Ayotte re-election result carries significance beyond Concord. First, it preserves Republican control of the New Hampshire governor's office at a moment when Democrats were winning high-profile races elsewhere. That makes Ayotte one of the night's most important Republican survivors, and her campaign is likely to be studied by other Republican incumbents facing difficult national environments.

Third, the margin itself tells a story. At roughly 51 percent to 48 percent in the Decision Desk HQ figures, this was not a landslide. It suggests that while Ayotte retained majority support, a large share of voters were ready for a change. That closeness may shape how she governs in her second term, encouraging outreach to the nearly half of the electorate that backed her opponent.

Reactions and Quotes

Early reporting focused on the calls themselves rather than extended victory speeches, with Fox News projecting the win late on Tuesday night and the Associated Press confirming it early on Wednesday. Those calls, based on the votes available at the time, gave Ayotte's supporters confirmation after a long election night and set the terms for discussion about what the result meant nationally.

Warmington's share of the vote, close to 48 percent in the Decision Desk HQ count, demonstrated substantial support and suggested that New Hampshire remains genuinely competitive, even when an incumbent prevails. As final results are certified in the coming days, the official margin may shift slightly from the election-night figures, and the county-by-county breakdown will show where each candidate gained ground.

Why It Matters

Governors matter because they shape daily life in ways federal politics often does not: schools, roads, housing, health care, taxes and emergency response all run substantially through state government. In New Hampshire, where the governor works alongside the Executive Council and a large, part-time legislature, the governor's priorities still set much of the state's agenda, from the budget to appointments.

What Happens Next

Ayotte will now prepare for her second two-year term, which will run through early 2029, with another election to follow in 2028 if she seeks a third term. In the immediate term, attention will turn to certification of results and to her second-term agenda, including budget priorities and any changes to her administration.

The New Hampshire legislature will also shape what is possible in the next session. Governors in New Hampshire must build coalitions in a large House of Representatives and a 24-member Senate, and the balance of power there will determine how much of Ayotte's programme can pass. For Warmington and New Hampshire Democrats, the task now is to assess a competitive but losing campaign ahead of the next cycle, which in New Hampshire is never far away.
