Stacey Plaskett has been elected governor of the US Virgin Islands, becoming the first woman ever elected to lead the territory in a historic result in the 2026 midterm elections. Plaskett and her running mate, Milton Potter, took 62.8 percent of the vote — 11,865 ballots in unofficial returns — in a five-ticket race on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, defeating four independent tickets. She will be sworn in on January 4, 2027, once the Election System of the Virgin Islands certifies the results, ending 56 years in which Virgin Islanders have elected their own governors but never a woman to the office.

What Happened

Voters in the US Virgin Islands went to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, as part of a midterm election night that produced historic results across the United States. In the territory's governor's race, unofficial returns gave the Plaskett-Potter ticket 62.8 percent of the vote, a commanding margin in a field of five tickets. The four rival tickets all ran as independents, and none came close to challenging the lead established by Plaskett, the territory's long-serving delegate to the US House of Representatives.

The result is not yet final: the Election System of the Virgin Islands must still certify the returns. But the scale of the margin leaves little doubt, and attention has already turned to the transition ahead of her January 4, 2027 swearing-in.

Background/Context

The US Virgin Islands, a US territory in the Caribbean made up principally of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, has elected its own governors since 1970. Before that change, governors were appointed by the president of the United States. The move to elected governors was a major step in the territory's self-government, giving Virgin Islanders a direct say in who leads their executive branch. In the 56 years since, however, every governor elected has been a man — a streak Plaskett's victory now breaks.

The governor leads the territorial government, overseeing its agencies, proposing budgets and working with the territorial legislature on laws affecting daily life, from schools and hospitals to roads, ports and tourism, the backbone of the local economy. The territory's relationship with Washington runs through both the governor's office and the delegate's office in Congress, and the two roles must work closely together, particularly when the islands seek federal assistance after hurricanes or press for changes in federal policy. Plaskett, delegate since 2015, is one of the most visible figures in Virgin Islands politics.

Stacey Plaskett US Virgin Islands Governor: A Historic First

The historic character of Plaskett's win extends beyond the territory itself. According to Reuters, she is the first Black woman elected governor of a US jurisdiction, a milestone reached on the same night that Keisha Lance Bottoms won the governor's race in Georgia, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. The two victories, in very different political settings, made November 3, 2026 a landmark night for representation in American executive offices.

The night continued a broader 2026 pattern of women winning governorships: in Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar became that state's first woman governor, while in New Hampshire, Kelly Ayotte won re-election. Plaskett's victory adds a territorial first to that list.

Reactions/Quotes

News of Plaskett's victory spread quickly on election night, with supporters celebrating a result many had anticipated but few wanted to take for granted before the votes were counted. The scale of the win — nearly two-thirds of ballots cast in unofficial returns — was read by observers as a broad endorsement of Plaskett's record and of the ticket she formed with Milton Potter.

Formal reaction from election authorities remains measured while certification is pending — routine caution that does not cast doubt on a margin this wide. More broadly, the result was noted as part of a night of firsts, alongside Bottoms' win in Georgia.

Why It Matters

Plaskett's election matters for three reasons. First, it breaks a barrier that had stood since Virgin Islanders began electing their governors in 1970. Representation at the top of government shapes which voices are heard and which experiences inform decisions, and the territory's first woman governor changes the face of its leadership in a way that will be felt well beyond inauguration day.

Second, the result strengthens the territory's hand in Washington. A governor who has spent more than a decade as the islands' delegate arrives with relationships, knowledge of federal programmes and an understanding of how funding decisions are made — assets that matter for a territory that depends heavily on federal support for infrastructure, health care and disaster recovery. The transition from delegate to governor also means the territory will soon choose a new voice in Congress, a contest that will itself draw close attention.

Third, the win fits the larger 2026 story: voters in states and territories alike reshaped executive leadership. For a territory whose residents cannot vote for president, the governor's race is the most powerful expression of self-government available.

What Happens Next

The immediate next step is certification. The Election System of the Virgin Islands will verify the returns from the November 3 vote and declare the official result, confirming the Plaskett-Potter ticket's victory. Once certified, the focus shifts to the transition: assembling an administration, preparing a budget and setting out the new governor's priorities for the first months in office. Plaskett will be sworn in on January 4, 2027, marking the formal transfer of power.

Longer term, the new administration faces familiar Virgin Islands questions: the economy, public services across three main islands, hurricane readiness and territorial finances. How Plaskett answers them will define a governorship that begins with history.
