Three people are dead and two Spokane County sheriff's deputies are fighting for their lives after a shooting and firefight at a home near Spangle, Washington, on Tuesday afternoon, in a case that began with a woman telling a neighbour that her brother had shot her.

Key Points

• Three people died, including the suspect, in the Spangle-area shooting on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
• Two Spokane County SWAT deputies were critically injured and taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.
• Deputies responded at about 2:30 p.m. after a woman told a neighbour her brother had shot her.
• One victim was found inside the home and another in the yard; the suspect also died.
• No names had been released and the motive remained under investigation.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, to a home in the 18000 block of South Smythe Road, about 18 miles south of Spokane and near U.S. Highway 195. What they found there escalated quickly into one of the most serious attacks on local law enforcement in the county in recent memory.

Two SWAT deputies were critically injured when gunfire met officers trying to enter the home. Both were taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where Sheriff John Nowels said they were fighting for their lives. A woman who reported being shot by her brother was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

One victim was found dead inside the home and another was found dead in the yard. The suspect also died. Authorities had not released the names of the victims, the suspect, or the wounded deputies by the time the sheriff's office gave its first public account, and the cause and motive remained under investigation.

The shooting has shaken Spangle, a small community south of Spokane where violent confrontations of this scale are rare, and it has renewed attention on the risks faced by deputies answering domestic-violence calls and executing warrants in rural areas, where backup can be minutes away and a single doorway can become a deadly choke point.

What Happened

The call that brought deputies to South Smythe Road came from a neighbour, after a woman said her brother had shot her. Deputies arrived to find a situation that was already dangerous and still unfolding, with the possibility that other people inside the home could be hurt.

Sheriff John Nowels said the suspect had an active felony warrant. Because deputies believed there might be other victims inside, they called in the SWAT team, a decision that reflects standard practice when officers cannot be sure whether someone is trapped, injured, or being held inside a property.

Background and Context

Spangle sits in the rolling farmland of Spokane County, south of the city of Spokane along the corridor toward U.S. 195. It is a small, close-knit community where neighbours know one another, and where a heavy law-enforcement response is immediately visible and deeply felt.

The address given by authorities, the 18000 block of South Smythe Road, places the incident in a rural residential area rather than a town centre. In such locations, deputies often cover large areas, response times can be longer, and officers must make difficult decisions with limited information about who is inside a home.

The Spangle Shooting Investigation

The investigation now moves into its second phase: securing the scene, documenting evidence, and establishing a clear timeline from the first neighbour's report to the final shots. Detectives will examine the home, the yard, and the surrounding property, and will seek any video, phone records, or witness accounts that can fill gaps in what is known.

A central question is what happened in the hours before deputies arrived. Investigators will want to know when the woman was shot, how she reached a neighbour, and whether anyone else was in the home at the time. The answers will help determine whether this was a family dispute that escalated, a confrontation tied to the outstanding warrant, or a combination of factors.

Reactions and Quotes

Sheriff John Nowels spoke with visible emotion about the wounded deputies. Describing their condition, he said: "Both of our deputies, fighting for their lives." The remark, quoted in early coverage of the incident, captured the gravity of the injuries and the mood within the sheriff's office.

Nowels also described the two injured deputies as young SWAT members, a detail that underlines the human cost of the operation. Behind every tactical team are officers early in their careers who volunteer for some of the most dangerous work in policing, and their colleagues now face an anxious wait for news from the hospital.

Why It Matters

This shooting matters first because of its human toll: three people dead, two deputies critically injured, and a woman who survived being shot by a family member. Each of those facts represents a family changed permanently, and a community left to make sense of a violent afternoon.

It also matters because it highlights the danger of domestic-violence and warrant-related calls in rural America. Deputies in counties like Spokane cover vast areas and often arrive with limited backup. When a call involves a weapon and a person already wanted on a felony warrant, the margin for error shrinks dramatically.

What Happens Next

In the coming days, investigators are expected to release the names of the victims and the suspect once next of kin have been notified. They may also provide an update on the condition of the two wounded deputies, subject to family consent and hospital policy.

Detectives will continue to interview the surviving woman, neighbours, and deputies who were at the scene. Forensic work at the home and yard will continue, and investigators will examine whether any additional evidence, such as recordings or messages, helps explain the sequence of events.
