Letitia James has won a third term as New York attorney general, defeating Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy in the November 3, 2026 midterm election and extending the tenure of one of President Donald Trump's most prominent legal adversaries. With 86 percent of votes counted, James held 60.2 percent to Komatireddy's 39.8 percent, according to figures reported by WAMC, and the Associated Press projected her victory. The result keeps James as New York's chief legal officer for another four years, a role she has held since 2019 after first being elected in 2018.

James declared victory at the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan, where she appeared alongside Governor Kathy Hochul and State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. She told supporters that House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is set to wield the speaker's gavel, a remark that underlined how closely the New York result was tied to the wider Democratic performance in the 2026 midterms. For James, the win was also personal: she is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York and the first woman elected attorney general in the state's history.

What Happened

New Yorkers went to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a midterm election that drew national attention for the governor's race, congressional contests and the attorney general's race. In the attorney general contest, the incumbent Democrat faced Komatireddy, a Republican and former federal prosecutor who campaigned with Trump's endorsement. Early returns pointed to a clear margin for James, and by the early hours of Wednesday, November 4, WAMC reported at 1:38 a.m. that with 86 percent of votes counted, James had 60.2 percent to Komatireddy's 39.8 percent.

The Associated Press projected James as the winner, and James declared victory in Manhattan later that night. The celebration at the New York Hilton Midtown brought together senior New York Democrats, including Governor Hochul and Comptroller DiNapoli, signalling the importance the party placed on holding the office. The attorney general's office in New York is one of the most powerful state legal posts in the country, with broad authority over consumer protection, civil rights, environmental enforcement, charities and challenges to federal policy.

Background: Who Is Letitia James?

Letitia James was first elected attorney general in 2018 and took office in January 2019, breaking barriers as the first woman elected to the post and the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York. Before that, she served on the New York City Council and as New York City's public advocate, building a reputation as a progressive prosecutor and consumer advocate who was willing to take on large institutions.

As attorney general, James has pursued cases involving consumer fraud, housing, health care, environmental protection and civil rights, and her office has frequently been at the centre of litigation involving the federal government. That profile made her one of Trump's most visible legal opponents, both during his first term and after his return to office. Supporters credit her with using the office to defend New Yorkers and to hold powerful interests to account; critics, including Trump and his allies, have accused her of using the office for political purposes, a charge she has repeatedly rejected.

Letitia James Third Term: What the Win Means

A third term gives James four more years to shape the direction of the attorney general's office, and it removes any immediate question about succession in one of the country's most influential state legal posts. With a fresh mandate, she will be able to continue cases already under way, launch new investigations and set enforcement priorities without the uncertainty that accompanies an open seat or a change of leadership.

Reactions

James declared victory at the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan, appearing with Governor Kathy Hochul and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, and told supporters that Hakeem Jeffries is set to wield the speaker's gavel. The remark linked her win to the national Democratic victories in the House, and it drew cheers from supporters who had gathered for the election-night event. Her campaign presented the result as a vote of confidence in her record and in an independent attorney general's office.

Why It Matters

James's third term therefore has consequences well beyond Albany. Her office's approach to consumer protection, to health care and housing, and to challenges against federal action will continue to shape debates that affect millions of people. Businesses, advocacy groups and other state attorneys general will all be watching the priorities she sets in the coming months, from the cases she chooses to pursue to the settlements she negotiates.

What Happens Next

James will serve a new four-year term as attorney general, keeping her in the role through 2030. In the short term, her office is expected to continue its existing caseload while she sets out her priorities for the new term, including any new initiatives on consumer protection, affordability and civil rights that featured in her campaign.

Nationally, James's win will be read alongside the other midterm results as part of a broader story about voter sentiment in 2026. Whether it proves to be a turning point or simply a continuation of New York's political patterns will become clearer as the new term unfolds, but for now, the message from New York voters is unambiguous: Letitia James will remain their attorney general.
