A powerful cross-country storm is sweeping across the United States on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, threatening the Southeast with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes before heavy rain stalls over the I-95 corridor late Thursday into Friday. Forecasters say the same sprawling system will have touched more than 35 states and 120 million people by the end of the week.

Wednesday's most dangerous hours are centred on the Tennessee Valley, the Southern Appalachians and Georgia, with repeated heavy rain and strong thunderstorms expected from late morning onward. By Thursday the focus shifts east, and by Friday the heaviest rain sits over the Northeast, from the mid-Atlantic through New England.

Key Points

• The greatest severe-weather risk on Wednesday covers East Tennessee, eastern Alabama, southwestern North Carolina, northwestern South Carolina and much of northern and central Georgia, including Atlanta, with damaging wind gusts the main threat and isolated tornadoes possible from late Wednesday morning.
• A Level 1-of-4 flash-flood risk is in effect across East Tennessee and eastern Kentucky, with local rainfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour possible where storms repeat over the same areas.
• Heavy rain reaches the East Coast early Thursday and stalls over the I-95 corridor late Thursday into Friday, with widespread totals of more than an inch across the Northeast and localised totals of 2 to 3 inches from eastern Virginia and Maryland into southeast New England.
• A Level 1 flash-flood risk runs from New York City through Boston to Portland, Maine, on Friday, while heavy snow is expected in the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday evening into early Thursday.
• The same system caused the Four Corners flooding over the weekend that left at least one person dead in Arizona.

What Happened

Fox Weather reported on Wednesday morning that the storm was already organising across the Tennessee Valley and the Southern Appalachians, with a warm, humid air mass ahead of it and a strong jet stream overhead, a combination that favours fast-moving lines of thunderstorms. The severe-weather outlook put the highest risk over a broad stretch of the interior Southeast, with Atlanta squarely inside the risk area.

Damaging wind gusts are the main concern. Lines of storms moving quickly across East Tennessee, eastern Alabama and northern Georgia can bring down trees and power lines even without a tornado, and forecasters warned that a few tornadoes could spin up inside the line, particularly from late Wednesday morning into the afternoon. Where storms train over the same counties again and again, rainfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour are possible, enough to flood low-lying roads and small streams quickly.

Background and Context

This storm has already left a long trail behind it. Over the weekend it dumped torrential rain across the Four Corners region of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, forcing hundreds of evacuations and prompting Arizona's governor to declare a statewide emergency. A 73-year-old man was killed in floodwaters in Flagstaff, a second death there was suspected to be weather-related, and about 40 people were rescued around Sedona as Oak Creek surged.

The system then pushed east, and its footprint has only grown. November storms of this kind are not unusual: the clash between lingering warm, moist air in the South and cold air diving out of the Rockies is a classic set-up for severe weather in the Southeast and heavy rain in the Northeast. What makes this one stand out is its scale, from snow in the Colorado Rockies to downpours in New England, all from a single system.

Cross-Country Storm: Wednesday's Severe Threat in Detail

Wednesday's severe threat is concentrated but serious. Within the risk zone, the main dangers are damaging straight-line winds and a few isolated tornadoes, with the threat window opening late Wednesday morning and running through the afternoon and evening. Residents should treat a severe thunderstorm warning as seriously as a tornado warning when winds are the main threat: gusts strong enough to topple trees can be just as destructive as a weak tornado. Charging phones, securing loose outdoor items and knowing where to shelter on the lowest floor, away from windows, are the standard precautions forecasters repeat for a set-up like this. Meanwhile, the western end of the same system brings heavy snow to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday evening into early Thursday.

Reactions and Official Guidance

Forecasters have stressed two messages for two audiences. For the Southeast on Wednesday: stay weather-aware from late morning, have more than one way to receive warnings, and do not wait to see a tornado before taking shelter from a warned storm. For the East Coast from Thursday into Friday: never drive through flooded roads, where a few inches of moving water can carry a vehicle away.

Why It Matters

The storm matters because of how many people it touches and how many different hazards it carries at once. Drivers, airlines, schools and outdoor workers from the Southeast to New England all need to adjust plans on different days for different reasons. It also matters because it follows so closely on the deadly Southwest flooding of the weekend, and the same storm's next act is now threatening a fresh round of flooding hundreds of miles away.

What Happens Next

Wednesday belongs to the Southeast, with severe weather and heavy rain through the evening. Heavy rain reaches the East Coast early Thursday, then stalls over the I-95 corridor late Thursday into Friday, with widespread totals of more than an inch across the Northeast and localised totals of 2 to 3 inches from eastern Virginia and Maryland into southeast New England.

Friday brings the flash-flood risk to the corridor from New York City through Boston to Portland, Maine, while the system weakens and moves offshore over the weekend. Anyone travelling along I-95 late in the week should expect delays and ponding on roads, and should check forecasts again before setting out, since stalled rain bands can shift their heaviest totals with little notice.
