Latin Grammy-winning Tejano singer Bobby Pulido has flipped Texas's 15th Congressional District, defeating two-term Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz in one of the most striking results of the 2026 midterm elections. The Associated Press called the race for Pulido on Tuesday night, November 3, 2026, capping a first run for public office that turned a South Texas border district — redrawn by Texas Republicans in 2025 and carried by President Donald Trump by about 18 points in 2024 — back into Democratic hands. With 273 of 288 precincts reporting, Pulido led with 126,204 votes to De La Cruz's 76,305, about 61.6 percent to 38.4 percent, with an estimated 95.12 percent of the vote counted. De La Cruz conceded at about 10:10 p.m. on election night.

Key Points

• Democrat Bobby Pulido, 53, a Latin Grammy-winning Tejano singer, defeated Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz in Texas's 15th Congressional District on November 3, 2026.
• The Associated Press called the race for Pulido, who led 126,204 votes to 76,305 — about 61.6 percent to 38.4 percent — with 273 of 288 precincts reporting.
• De La Cruz conceded at about 10:10 p.m. on election night, ending a two-term tenure that began when she won the seat in 2022.
• The district, a former Democratic stronghold in the Rio Grande Valley, was redrawn by Texas Republicans in 2025 and was carried by President Donald Trump by about 18 points in 2024.
• Pulido campaigned on affordability, health care, getting corporate money out of elections and the impact of mass deportation raids, while distancing himself from the national Democratic Party on some border and culture-war issues.

What Happened

The 15th District, which stretches across the Rio Grande Valley in deep South Texas, had become a symbol of Republican inroads with Hispanic voters after De La Cruz won it in 2022. Tuesday's result reversed that story decisively. Pulido's margin of more than 23 points, with nearly 95 percent of the vote counted, left little doubt about the outcome by the time De La Cruz conceded shortly after 10 p.m.

The scale of the win surprised even seasoned Texas observers. A district redrawn by the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature in 2025 to strengthen the party's position instead produced one of the night's biggest Democratic flips. Results remain unofficial until certified by the state, but the Associated Press call and the concession settled the contest on election night. Pulido is expected to be sworn in when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027, joining a Democratic House majority won in Tuesday's midterms.

Background: From the Tejano Stage to the Ballot Box

Before he was a candidate, Bobby Pulido was a household name in Tejano music, a genre rooted in the Mexican-American communities of South Texas. His campaign leaned heavily on that connection to the same working-class border audiences he had performed for.

Pulido's platform centred on kitchen-table concerns: affordability, health care, getting corporate money out of elections, and the impact of mass deportation raids on border communities. At the same time, he kept a deliberate distance from the national Democratic Party on some border and culture-war issues, a positioning designed to appeal to voters in a district where many families hold socially conservative views alongside Democratic loyalties on economics and public services.

De La Cruz, by contrast, ran as an incumbent aligned with the Republican majority in Washington. She first won the seat in 2022, when Republicans celebrated her victory as proof that Hispanic voters in South Texas were shifting right. Her defeat four years later, in a district redrawn to help her party, underlines how sharply the mood shifted in the 2026 midterms.

Bobby Pulido Texas 15th District: A Flip That Tells the Story of Election Night

The 15th District result did not happen in isolation. It was part of a sweeping Democratic night in Texas that few forecasters had predicted at this scale. Democrats captured the state's Senate seat, the governorship and the lieutenant governorship, and they also won down-ballot statewide offices including comptroller, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner and railroad commissioner, ending more than three decades shut out of statewide power.

Texas Republicans' 2025 redistricting effort, designed to lock in their congressional advantage, largely backfired. Democrats held most targeted seats and flipped two previously Republican-held districts, with the 15th among the most prominent.

Reactions

De La Cruz conceded the race at about 10:10 p.m. on Tuesday, a swift acknowledgement of a decisive defeat. Her concession closed a campaign that had drawn national attention as a test of whether the Republican gains of 2022 in South Texas would hold through a difficult midterm environment for the party in power.

Democrats celebrated the result as evidence that their Texas breakthrough extended beyond the top of the ticket. The 15th District flip showed that the shift reached into congressional districts that Republicans had redrawn to protect themselves.

Why It Matters

The 15th District flip matters for three reasons. First, it adds to the Democratic House majority and removes a prominent Republican incumbent who had become a symbol of her party's Hispanic outreach. Second, it demonstrates that redistricting, often treated as a reliable tool for entrenching power, can fail spectacularly when the political environment turns against the mapmakers. Third, it signals that border communities, whose votes are courted intensely by both parties, responded in 2026 to a campaign built around affordability, health care and the human cost of deportation raids.

What Happens Next

Pulido will take his seat when the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027. As a freshman member of the House majority, he will face immediate questions about committee assignments and legislative priorities. For Texas Republicans, the loss will prompt a hard review of the 2025 redistricting and of the party's appeal to Hispanic voters in the Valley. For Democrats, the challenge now is to hold a seat that has changed hands twice in four years.
