US Central Command says it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps twice tried to target a US warship with ballistic missiles, in the latest US-Iran escalation. The vessel evaded both attacks and no US personnel were injured, according to the statement issued late on Tuesday, November 4, 2026. Iran confirmed that five tankers were targeted, but its wider claims of retaliation, including strikes on US vessels and a base in Jordan, have not been confirmed by Washington.

Key Points

• US Central Command says Iran's Revolutionary Guard twice tried to hit a US warship with ballistic missiles over two days, but the vessel evaded both attacks.
• The US says it destroyed five Iranian oil carriers: the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and the M/T Derya near Kharg Island.
• Central Command says crews were ordered to abandon ship before the strikes, and it later published video it said showed the Riesco sinking.
• Iran confirmed five tankers were targeted and claimed retaliation against 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz and a base in Jordan, claims Washington has not confirmed.
• President Donald Trump warned of a possible heavy hit on Iran, while Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned renewed US attacks would widen the war.

What Happened

According to Central Command, the Revolutionary Guard made two attempts to target a US warship with ballistic missiles over the previous two days. In both cases the vessel successfully evaded the attacks, and no American personnel were injured.

The United States then struck five Iranian oil carriers. Four were in the Gulf of Oman: the M/T Kaviz, the M/T Charminar, the M/T Horizon 1 and the M/T Riesco. The fifth, the M/T Derya, was near Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil-export terminal in the Persian Gulf. Central Command said crews were ordered to abandon ship before the strikes. It later published video it said showed the Riesco sinking.

Separately on Wednesday, the Revolutionary Guard said four other tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines south of the Strait of Hormuz, that two more vessels were halted, and that it shot down a drone over the strait. Those claims were unverified.

Background: A War Now in Its Ninth Month

The US-Iran war began on February 28, 2026, and is now in its ninth month. Much of the fighting has centred on the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes. That is why tanker attacks, mine claims, naval deployments and warnings about shipping have repeatedly moved oil markets and drawn in Gulf states, insurers and shipping companies.

US Destroys Five Iranian Oil Tankers in the Gulf of Oman

The destruction of five tankers in a single American response is a major step in the maritime campaign. Tankers are high-value, slow-moving targets, and their loss affects Iran's ability to move oil, earn revenue and project presence in Gulf waters. Naming the vessels, as Central Command did, also allows shipping registries, insurers and tracking services to identify the ships involved and assess the wider effect on fleets operating in the region.

The geography matters too. The Gulf of Oman lies just outside the Strait of Hormuz, on the route tankers take after leaving the Persian Gulf. Kharg Island, by contrast, is inside the Gulf and central to Iran's oil exports. Striking in both areas in one operation suggests a coordinated response rather than a single, isolated incident. What remains unclear is the full scale of damage and whether any crew members were harmed; Iran's confirmation that five tankers were targeted corroborates the core American claim, even though the two sides disagree sharply on what happened next.

Reactions: Tehran Claims Retaliation, Washington Silent on Damage Claims

Iran's Revolutionary Guard confirmed that five tankers were targeted, then claimed a wider retaliation: attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, including two US vessels and eight tankers, and missile strikes on the Al-Azraq base in Jordan, where it said hangars used by US fighter jets were destroyed. It also claimed that US Navy destroyers DDG-119 and DDG-53 suffered significant damage.

No US confirmation of damage to American vessels or to the Jordan base has been reported, and those Iranian claims remain unverified. Readers should treat them as claims by one side in an active conflict, not as established facts, until Washington, Jordan or independent evidence confirms or contradicts them. At the political level, Trump warned of a possible heavy hit on Iran, while Khamenei warned that renewed US attacks would widen the war and dismissed hopes that the Democrats' midterm wins would change Washington's approach.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman are among the most sensitive shipping routes in the world. Even a short disruption can raise insurance costs, force rerouting, delay deliveries and push oil prices higher. Tanker strikes therefore matter far beyond the vessels themselves: they affect energy markets, global trade and the cost of living in countries that import oil.

What Happens Next

The immediate questions are whether the United States will confirm or deny Iran's retaliation claims, whether Jordan will comment on the alleged base strike, and whether shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted in the coming days. Shipping companies, insurers and navies in the region will be watching for advisories, route changes and any further incidents.

Diplomatically, the focus will be on whether mediators can keep talks alive after a major exchange. Previous rounds have survived sharp escalations, but each new incident tests both sides' willingness to continue. US News Pulse will update this story as official statements, shipping data and independent verification become available. For now, the confirmed core is clear: the US says it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after two missile attempts on its warship, and Iran confirms the tankers were targeted while claiming a wider retaliation that Washington has not confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Iranian oil tankers did the US say it destroyed?
Five: the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and the M/T Derya near Kharg Island.

Was anyone on the US warship injured?
No. Central Command said the vessel evaded both ballistic-missile attempts and no US personnel were injured.

Did Iran retaliate against US ships and a base in Jordan?
Iran claims it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz and fired missiles at the Al-Azraq base in Jordan. The United States has not confirmed damage to its vessels or the base, so those claims remain unverified.

Why does the Strait of Hormuz matter so much?
It is a narrow chokepoint for a large share of the world's seaborne oil. Disruption there can raise shipping and insurance costs and push global energy prices higher.

Does this mean negotiations with Iran are over?
Not necessarily. US officials have recently said talks have made progress, while also warning that strikes remain possible.
