What Happened

Court records reviewed by USA TODAY on November 4, 2026, show Bridget Norris filed the divorce petition on Valentine's Day 2025. TMZ first reported the filing. Bridget told the court she and Dean Norris married on October 27, 2001, and separated on January 15, 2025, about a month before she filed.

TMZ reported that Bridget cited irreconcilable differences, the standard ground in California. She asked for joint legal and physical custody and spousal support. Later reports said Dean Norris responded several months later, but nothing reviewed so far indicates the divorce has been finalised.

The timing explains why the news feels sudden although the filing is not new: the couple did not announce the split in early 2025, and the case proceeded out of public view for more than a year and a half until the Riverside County records were reviewed this week.

Background/Context

Dean Norris is best known as DEA agent Hank Schrader, the brother-in-law of chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin Walter White in Breaking Bad, a role he reprised in the prequel series Better Call Saul. Hank's arc made Norris one of the most recognisable faces of a show widely regarded as one of the greatest television dramas ever made.

Around that role, Norris built a long, steady career: all three seasons of CBS's Under the Dome, Air Force officer Colonel Richard Williams in The Big Bang Theory (reprised in spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe), and series-regular roles on TNT's Claws and CBS's United States of Al, often playing law enforcement officers and soldiers.

Bridget Norris, a former entertainment lawyer, has largely stayed out of the spotlight. They share five children, and the two youngest are still minors: son Dean Vincent Norris and daughter Zoe Norris. According to her IMDb page, Zoe's acting career began this year with roles in two independent films.

Dean Norris Divorce: What the Court Records Show

The court record is narrow and factual. It establishes the filing date of February 14, 2025, the marriage date of October 27, 2001, and the separation date of January 15, 2025; that Bridget Norris is the petitioner, seeking joint legal and physical custody and spousal support; and that the case remains open with a January hearing on a change of counsel scheduled.

It does not establish a final settlement, a division of property, or a custody order, and reports that the divorce has not been finalised are consistent with the case's open status. Proceedings of this kind can move slowly, particularly where children, support, and property are involved.

Reactions/Quotes

Neither Dean Norris nor Bridget Norris has issued a public statement about the divorce, and USA TODAY said it had reached out to representatives for the couple for comment. That silence fits how the case has been handled throughout: filed without announcement and revealed only through the court record.

The most revealing on-the-record words from Norris about his family life come from a 2010 interview with USA TODAY, in which he spoke about why he took the steady work that made him famous. Acknowledging that many of the characters he plays are tough-guy law-and-order types, he said he was not concerned about being pigeonholed if it meant a steady paycheck. "I never had a month or so go by where I haven't had a job, but you always worry that someone will turn off the tap," he said. "The way I look at it, I'm a guy who acts to live. You can always have a job if you can play shoot-'em-up stuff. If playing cops pays the bills, that's what I need to do to support my family."

That remark is not a comment on the divorce, but it states plainly the values Norris attached to his career and his household.

Why It Matters

This story matters for a quieter reason than spectacle: it shows how much of a public figure's life can unfold entirely in private. For more than 20 months, one of television's most familiar actors was going through a divorce without the public knowing, and the case surfaced only because court records are public documents.

It also matters because of what is at stake. With two minor children involved, Bridget's request for joint custody would shape where the children live and how major decisions about their lives are made. For fans, the news reframes a familiar figure, as the actor behind the loyal, family-bound Hank Schrader navigates a real family transition of his own.

What Happens Next

The next known step is the January hearing regarding a change in Dean Norris's legal counsel. Such hearings are a normal part of long-running cases, and a change of lawyer does not by itself signal a change in the direction of the proceedings. It does, however, confirm that the case is active and that further court dates are likely.

Beyond that hearing, the case will depend on whether the parties agree on custody, support, and property, or whether those questions require further court orders. Whether either side speaks publicly remains open. For now, the next update is most likely to come from the courtroom in January rather than from either party.
