Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, that the United States has had "very good talks" with Iran over the last 24 hours and that the war could be "over quickly" if Tehran accepts a new American peace proposal now under review. The Trump Iran deal remarks were his most optimistic assessment since the conflict entered its ninth month, but they came with a warning: if diplomacy collapses, bombing will resume. Iran pushed back within hours, saying it had not yet answered the proposal.

Key Points

• Trump said the US has had "very good talks" with Iran and that a deal is "very possible".
• He told supporters the war would be "over quickly" if a deal is reached, but threatened renewed bombing if talks fail.
• Reports say the sides are close to a short memorandum or a 14-point document, with a 12-year enrichment halt for sanctions relief.
• Iran says it has not yet responded, that enrichment is non-negotiable, and that it will not surrender about 400kg of highly enriched uranium.
• US forces disabled the Iranian-flagged tanker M/T Hasna in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday over blockade violations.

What Happened

At the White House on Wednesday, Trump said Iran wants to "make a deal badly" and added a clear condition: "if we get there, they can't have nuclear weapons." He told PBS he was optimistic about an agreement before his scheduled trip to China next week, a timetable that makes the coming days decisive. Later, addressing party supporters, he went further, saying of the war: "It'll be over quickly."

But there was also an explicit threat: "if it doesn't end, we have to go back to bombing the hell out of them." According to Reuters, citing a Pakistani source and another person briefed on the mediation, the sides are close to a one-page memorandum formally ending the conflict. Axios reported they are "getting close" to a 14-point document under which Iran would agree not to develop a nuclear weapon and halt uranium enrichment for at least 12 years, while the US would lift sanctions, release billions in frozen Iranian assets, and both sides would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days of signing.

Background and Context

The war began on February 28, 2026, and is now in its ninth month. Early American strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, and the conflict has since widened into air strikes, naval interdiction and repeated rounds of mediated talks that produced headlines but no durable settlement. A June memorandum brokered in Islamabad collapsed, and a 14-point Iranian proposal tabled last week drew a cool American response.

The latest round follows a week of mixed signals. Vice President JD Vance said on Monday, November 2, that Washington had made "progress" in talks and had set no deadline for a deal. On Tuesday, the administration paused "Project Freedom," its operation to escort shipping through Hormuz, citing progress toward a deal, while keeping the naval blockade of Iranian ports in full force. Mediation has run through Pakistan and Qatar.

The Trump Iran Deal Terms Under Discussion

The reported 14-point framework would trade Iran's long-term nuclear restraint for economic relief and a reopening of Hormuz. A 12-year halt to uranium enrichment would be far longer than the sunset clauses in earlier nuclear agreements. For Washington, that duration is the point: officials say the top priority is a firm, verifiable commitment that Iran will not rebuild a nuclear programme the United States says it destroyed.

For Tehran, the price is stark. Enrichment has been presented domestically as a sovereign right, and the roughly 400kg of highly enriched uranium at the centre of the dispute is both a bargaining chip and a symbol. Lifting sanctions and releasing frozen assets would give Tehran immediate fiscal relief, while reopening Hormuz within 30 days would restore a shipping lane whose disruption has raised energy costs worldwide.

Reactions and Quotes

Iran's response on Wednesday was notably sceptical. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran has yet to give its response via mediator Pakistan and that "the investigation into the exchanged texts is ongoing." Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf mocked the Axios report as "Operation Trust Me Bro failed," and the Tasnim news agency said the American text contained unacceptable provisions.

Iran's red lines remained unchanged: enrichment is non-negotiable, and it will not surrender the highly enriched uranium stockpile. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that ships must pay in Iranian currency and that war participants must pay reparations before transit permits are issued — conditions that would complicate any Hormuz reopening. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would speak with Trump later on Wednesday and that both agreed all enriched uranium must be removed from Iran.

Why It Matters

A deal would end the longest American military engagement in the Middle East in years and remove the single largest driver of recent oil-price volatility. The war has shaped the 2026 midterm campaign, influenced global energy markets.

Failure would be costly in the opposite direction. Trump has publicly tied his credibility to the claim that a deal is near and that the war could end quickly. If Tehran rejects the text, the threatened return to bombing would follow a period in which the administration paused an operation and spoke of progress. For Iran, rejection risks heavier strikes.

What Happens Next

The immediate test is Tehran's formal response. Baghaei's statement that the texts are still under investigation leaves the timetable open, but Trump's reference to a deal before his China trip next week creates a soft deadline both sides will feel. If Iran answers with counter-proposals rather than rejection, negotiators could move quickly to a signing announcement. If it refuses the enrichment terms outright, the pattern of recent months could repeat.

The disabling of the M/T Hasna on Wednesday shows enforcement has not paused even as diplomacy accelerates. For now, the facts are these: Trump says talks have been very good, reports say a deal is near, and Iran says it has not yet replied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did Trump say about Iran on November 4? He said the US has had "very good talks" with Iran, that a deal is "very possible," that Iran wants to "make a deal badly," and that the war would be "over quickly" if a deal is reached — while warning bombing would resume if talks collapse.

What would the reported 14-point deal include? Iran would agree not to develop a nuclear weapon and halt enrichment for at least 12 years; the US would lift sanctions, release frozen assets, and both sides would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days of signing.

Has Iran accepted the proposal? No. Tehran said it has yet to respond, that its review is ongoing, and that parts of the American text are unacceptable. Enrichment remains non-negotiable.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz so important? It is a narrow chokepoint for much of the world's seaborne oil, so its disruption raises energy prices worldwide.

What happens if talks fail? Trump has threatened a return to bombing, and the blockade remains in force.
