MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Jeffrey Weisheit, 50, was executed by lethal injection early Thursday at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, closing a 16-year case that began with a house fire that killed two young children near Evansville. The Indiana execution of Jeffrey Weisheit was carried out at 12:45 a.m. local time, the Indiana Department of Correction said.

Key Points

• Weisheit, 50, was executed by lethal injection of pentobarbital at 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. He had no last words.
• He was convicted in 2013 for a 2010 house fire that killed his then-girlfriend's two children, Alyssa Lynch, 8, and Caleb Lynch, 5.
• The Indiana Supreme Court denied his final stay request hours earlier in a 3-2 vote; Chief Justice Loretta Rush dissented.
• Governor Mike Braun denied clemency on November 2, after the Parole Board unanimously recommended against it.
• Florida and Alabama were also scheduled to carry out executions later on Thursday.

What Happened

The execution went ahead despite a last-minute challenge filed only hours before Weisheit's death. His attorneys submitted an emergency complaint in Marion Superior Court, arguing the state had not held its pentobarbital long enough to be sure it had not degraded, and that the drug came from a pharmacy state officials had placed on probation.

The Indiana Supreme Court denied the motion 3-2. Chief Justice Loretta Rush was among the dissenters; she and Justice Christopher Goff sought a 10-day stay to allow "the parties to provide immediate submissions on the drugs' formulation, expiration, storage, and any testing." They were overruled. At 1 a.m. CST, Governor Mike Braun said: "Today, Weisheit's sentence has been carried out as ordered by the court." It was Indiana's first execution of 2026 and its fourth since executions resumed in December 2024 after a 15-year pause.

Indiana Execution Jeffrey Weisheit: The Final Legal Fight

The final legal fight centred on where Indiana obtained its lethal-injection drug. His lawyers identified the supplier as Pharmaneek Pharmacy Services of Indianapolis, after an address remained visible on a redacted invoice. The company is on probation after a complaint by Attorney General Todd Rokita's office over drug contamination and storage problems, and faces a possible licence suspension at a Board of Pharmacy hearing on November 9.

A March 2026 report by the US Food and Drug Administration said the facility was not maintained in good repair, creating unsanitary conditions in which drugs could be contaminated; inspectors had also found unlabeled pill bottles, expired drugs on active shelves, a room kept at 84 degrees and no consistent temperature logs. The state bought six 50-millilitre vials of pentobarbital for $275,000, far above the typical $15,120 to $16,250. The Department of Correction said it remains confident it can "humanely" carry out the execution.

Background: The 2010 Fire and the Long Road to Execution

The case began on the evening of April 9, 2010, when Weisheit was supposed to be watching Alyssa and Caleb Lynch at their home on Fischer Road in Northern Vanderburgh County while their mother, Lisa, worked an overnight shift. Court records say he became "enraged" at Caleb when the boy fought against going to bed, hog-tied the 5-year-old, shoved a towel in his mouth and duct-taped it. Early the next morning, officials found the home engulfed in flames. The children were dead inside; an autopsy found they died of smoke inhalation.

Weisheit fled and was tracked about 200 miles away in Eastern Kentucky after a high-speed chase, before being tasered. After a three-week trial in 2013, a jury found him guilty of murder, and Clark County Judge Daniel Moore sentenced him to die, setting the execution for June 19, 2014. Appeals, drug shortages and a 15-year pause in Indiana executions pushed the date to Thursday morning. Our earlier coverage: Indiana lawyers race to halt Weisheit execution over drug supplier probe.

Reactions

The strongest words came from the children's mother, Lisa Lynch, who told the Parole Board last month: "I'm here today to ensure my children's voice are heard, their names are spoken, and their lives are remembered." She described Alyssa as "a smart, creative girl who was beautiful inside and out" and Caleb as a "sweet and lovable" boy who loved trains. "The silence that replaced their laughter," she said, "was deafening."

Weisheit addressed the board on October 16. "I feel horrible about taking the lives of Alyssa and Caleb. There is no excuse or explanation for what I did," he said. "I think about them everyday. And I would give anything if I could change this."

Why It Matters

First, the case tests how much transparency states must provide about execution drugs: the supplier was on probation, its licence was under threat, and the execution went ahead before the November 9 hearing. Second, it comes amid renewed scrutiny of lethal injection after two botched executions in Tennessee: Tony Carruthers' execution was called off in May after staff repeatedly failed to find a vein, and Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital on September 30, waking days later after the drug leaked into her tissue. She said there "hasn't been a moment since that night when I haven't been in pain." See our report: Christa Pike speaks out after surviving Tennessee's botched execution. Third, Indiana has now carried out four executions in under two years after a 15-year pause.

What Happens Next

In Florida, Jesse Guardado, 64, was set to be executed for fatally stabbing 75-year-old Jackie Malone in 2004. It would be Florida's 19th execution of 2026, matching last year's record; the state has carried out more than half of the 32 executions nationwide so far this year. In Alabama, Michael Taylor, 54, was scheduled to die by lethal injection for the 1991 murders of an older couple beaten to death with a metal bar during a robbery. He had sought execution by nitrogen gas, but a judge ruled against him, and Governor Kay Ivey rejected clemency.
