Pope Leo XIV begins his first trip to Latin America as pontiff on Friday, November 6, 2026, returning to the continent where he spent two decades as a missionary and bishop, just three weeks after surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his lung. The journey runs to November 17, taking the 71-year-old pope through Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, covering about 31,000 kilometres on around 14 flights, with outdoor Masses expected to draw millions. The Vatican says doctors have cleared him to travel.

Key Points

• Pope Leo XIV, 71, begins his first Latin America trip as pontiff on Friday, November 6, 2026, running to November 17.
• Three weeks after October 13 surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his lung; doctors say he needs no further treatment.
• About 31,000 km (19,000 miles) on around 14 flights plus two helicopter rides: two days in Uruguay, three in Argentina, nearly a week in Peru.
• Outdoor Masses expected to draw millions, meetings with political leaders, youth vigils, and helicopter flights to remote Andean communities.
• In Peru he returns to Lima and Chiclayo, the diocese he led from 2015 to 2023, where he spent two decades as a missionary and became a citizen.

What Happened

The Vatican confirmed the itinerary will go ahead as planned despite the pope's recent operation. Leo underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a cancerous tumour from his lung, and doctors have since confirmed he needs no further treatment. The trip is one of the most demanding overseas tours by a Catholic leader in decades, taking him from secular Uruguay to Argentina, homeland of his predecessor Pope Francis, and then to Peru, where he spent years as a missionary and bishop.

In Uruguay he honours Our Lady of the Thirty-Three at Florida on Sunday, November 8. In Argentina he visits the Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan, the country's most revered shrine. In Peru he returns to Lima and to Chiclayo, the northern diocese he led for eight years. The schedule mixes huge public events with intimate ones: outdoor Masses expected to draw millions, meetings with political leaders, youth vigils, and helicopter flights to remote Andean communities.

Background and Context

Leo is no stranger to Latin America. The Chicago-born pope first arrived in Peru as a missionary decades ago, later served as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023, and became a Peruvian citizen. His return as pontiff is a homecoming no previous pope has made: he is visiting a country he once served, in a language he speaks, among people who knew him as their bishop.

But the continent he is returning to is markedly less Catholic than the one he first encountered. Latin America remains the world's largest Catholic region in absolute numbers, yet Catholic identity is steadily shrinking. A Pew survey in 2024 of six of the most populous Latin American countries found fewer people identifying as Catholic than a decade earlier, and around one-fifth of adults said they had been raised Catholic but had left the Church. Evangelical churches, have grown fast: in Brazil, nearly 27 percent now identify as evangelical Christians. Leo made history last week as the first sitting pope known to vote in a US election,

Pope Leo XIV Latin America Trip: The Itinerary

The journey opens in Uruguay, where Leo spends two days, including the November 8 devotion at Florida to Our Lady of the Thirty-Three, the patroness of the country. From there he flies to Argentina for three days, visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan and meeting political leaders in the homeland of Pope Francis. The longest leg is Peru, where he spends nearly a week, returning to Lima and Chiclayo and flying by helicopter to remote Andean communities, including a November 14 flight to Santa Cruz de Succhabamba.

The scale of the travel is striking: about 31,000 kilometres in total, on around 14 flights plus two helicopter rides. The Vatican has not altered a single stop after the surgery, a deliberate signal that the pope is fit to travel and determined to make the journey.

Reactions and Quotes

Researchers who track religion in the region say the trip lands at a moment of real change. Kirsten Lesage, an associate researcher at the Pew Research Center, said of the 2024 survey: "We have seen a decline in all of the countries that we surveyed in 2024. There are fewer people identifying (as Catholic)."

Rev. Jorge Reinaudo, a parish priest in Córdoba, Argentina, said: "Not belonging to a religion does not mean people lack faith; it means they live out their faith in their own way." Miguel Pastorino, a professor at Uruguay's Catholic University, described "a growing trend toward 'à la carte' religiosity, in which people create their own spiritual menu, without feeling the need to subscribe to any particular institution." Pablo Coimbra, a parish priest in Montevideo's Casavalle neighbourhood, said: "The pope's visit has perhaps awakened a memory, something deep in people's hearts regarding faith and belonging to the Church."

Why It Matters

The trip matters for the Church, for the region and for Leo himself. Latin America is still home to more Catholics than any other region, but the Church is losing ground to fast-growing evangelical denominations, more progressive social attitudes and individualised forms of worship. Belief in God remains exceptionally high, even among people who no longer identify with a religion, which suggests the Church's challenge is less disbelief than changing habits of worship. For Leo, it is also a statement about his papacy: he returns to the continent that shaped him, weeks after major surgery, on one of the most demanding papal itineraries in decades.

What Happens Next

Leo departs on Friday, November 6, starting in Uruguay before moving on to Argentina and then Peru. The coming days will show how the 71-year-old holds up under the pace of the schedule, with the Vatican and his doctors watching his health closely. The outdoor Masses are expected to draw millions, and the turnouts in Lima and Chiclayo will be read as a measure of the Church's enduring pull. The trip ends on November 17, when Leo returns to Rome.
