Haitian police have found the burned-out remains of the truck carrying four Salvadoran aviation technicians who vanished in a gang ambush more than two weeks ago, as El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele vowed his expanded force would "finish" Haiti's gangs.

The wreck was found on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in the Santo neighbourhood of Croix-des-Bouquets, outside Port-au-Prince, in a joint operation by Haitian police, the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and Salvadoran troops. The four men have still not been found.

Key Points

• Haitian police found the burned remains of the truck used by four missing Salvadoran aviation technicians on Tuesday, November 3, in Santo, Croix-des-Bouquets, outside Port-au-Prince.
• The four men are still missing more than two weeks after the October 18, 2026 ambush, and no trace of them was found near the vehicle.
• The truck was found in gang-held territory in a joint operation by Haitian police, the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force and Salvadoran troops.
• Haitian authorities call the men missing, El Salvador's government believes they are alive, and gang leader Wilson Joseph has said he believes they died.
• President Nayib Bukele has sent more than 2,000 Salvadoran troops to Haiti since the disappearance, and on Wednesday, November 4, warned gang leaders his forces would "finish" them as he did in El Salvador.

What Happened

The four technicians served with the Gang Suppression Force, the UN-backed mission helping Haitian police retake territory from armed gangs. They were attacked outside the capital on October 18, 2026, while returning to base from a market, El Salvador's government said. The ambush left their vehicle burning and the men missing, and no gang has claimed responsibility.

More than two weeks later, police located the burned truck in Santo, a neighbourhood of Croix-des-Bouquets on the edge of Port-au-Prince in gang-held territory. The vehicle was burned out, with no trace of the four men nearby.

The discovery settles where the truck ended up but leaves the central question open. Haitian authorities still call the men missing; El Salvador's government believes they are alive; Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, has said he believes they died. None of this has been independently confirmed, and the search continues.

Background and Context

Haiti has had no elected leaders for years, and armed gangs control large parts of Port-au-Prince and nearby areas. Around 1.5 million people have been displaced, and the outgunned Haitian police have struggled to hold territory even with international help. The Gang Suppression Force was created to add muscle, but it has only about 2,000 troops — just over a third of its planned size.

El Salvador is the mission's most visible contributor. Its first contingent of at least 124 personnel — pilots and technicians, not frontline fighters, according to Bukele — was already in Haiti when the four disappeared. The ambush changed the scale of the presence overnight: within days, El Salvador began sending around 1,000 soldiers, with US Southern Command providing C-130 aircraft to move some of them. Bukele has framed the Haiti mission as an export of his security model at home, where a sweeping crackdown drove El Salvador's homicide rate to historic lows but drew criticism from human rights groups. Supporters see a proven approach to gang control; critics worry how it will be applied where the state itself has largely collapsed.

Haiti Burned Truck: What the Discovery Means for the Missing Salvadoran Technicians

The burned truck is the first hard evidence recovered from the October 18 ambush since the four technicians vanished. Its location, in gang-held territory outside the capital, fits an attack on a road outside Port-au-Prince, but no trace of the men was found nearby. A burned vehicle confirms an ambush happened; it cannot say what happened to the people inside.

The discovery also raises the stakes of a disagreement running since the first days after the ambush. El Salvador's position — that the men are alive, possibly held hostage — has driven the rapid expansion of its deployment. The Haitian authorities' caution reflects how little is known. And Wilson Joseph's claim that the men died, if true, would turn the search into a recovery operation for a mission that has already lost personnel before reaching full strength.

Reactions and Quotes

Bukele used the moment to promote the deployment and warn Haiti's gang leaders directly. On Wednesday, November 4, he said his forces would "finish" them as he did in El Salvador — a message aimed as much at the gangs as at audiences at home and in Haiti watching whether the expanded presence can deliver results.

Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, has denied holding the four men and said he believes they died — a claim not independently verified. No gang has claimed the ambush. Why It Matters

The fate of the four technicians has become the defining test of the international mission in Haiti. The Gang Suppression Force was already short of troops, money and momentum before the ambush; losing four of its own in a single attack, then failing to find them for more than two weeks, raises hard questions about whether the mission can protect its own people, let alone Haitians.

It matters for El Salvador too. Bukele has staked political capital on the deployment, presenting it as proof his security model works beyond his borders. A rescue would strengthen that case; a prolonged disappearance with no answers would feed criticism that the deployment was expanded in haste.

What Happens Next

The search continues, with Haitian police, the Gang Suppression Force and Salvadoran troops now working from where the burned truck was found. Investigators will look for further evidence in Santo and nearby gang-held territory, though operating there carries obvious risks.

El Salvador's expanded deployment will also be watched closely: more than 2,000 troops are now committed, and Bukele's warning sets an expectation of visible action. How that force is used will shape how the mission is judged in the months ahead.
