Bob Dylan met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in a brief private audience that paired one of America's greatest songwriters with the first American pope. The 85-year-old singer swapped his autobiography for a rosary during the meeting at the Apostolic Palace, in a break from his Italy tour. The Vatican said the encounter consisted of greetings and a few lighthearted exchanges, and photographs shared by the Vatican newspaper showed the two men shaking hands.

What Happened

The meeting took place during a break in Dylan's Italy tour. He had played in Milan on Monday and was due to perform in Rome on Thursday, November 5, at the Palazzo dello Sport. The Vatican audience was arranged with the help of Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a Vatican culture ministry official, and Andrea Monda, editor of L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper.

According to the Vatican, the audience was short and informal. The two men exchanged greetings and a few lighthearted remarks, and the gifts they swapped told the story of the meeting: a rosary from the pope, and a copy of Dylan's memoir from the singer. Photographs released by the Vatican newspaper showed Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, shaking hands with the pontiff, dressed in black against the pope's white cassock.

Background and Context

Dylan's relationship with the Vatican is not new. Nearly 30 years earlier, in 1997, he performed before Pope John Paul II in Bologna, an appearance that drew attention because the singer, raised Jewish and famously private about his beliefs, had spent decades avoiding easy labels about religion. He has written some of the most enduring spiritual songs in popular music, from "Blowin' in the Wind" to "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.

Pope Leo XIV, 71, is the first American pope, and his admiration for Dylan is on the record. In July 2026 he quoted the singer's unpublished 1963 anti-nuclear protest song "Go Away You Bomb" in the preface to a Vatican book on disarmament, "Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift". The lines he chose, "I hate you cause yer man-made and man-owned, an' man-handled", were used to warn against global rearmament, a theme the pope has returned to repeatedly since his election.

Bob Dylan Meets Pope Leo XIV

The image of the two men together is striking because of how different their worlds are, and how much they overlap. Dylan, born in 1941, became the voice of a generation with protest songs written in his early twenties, then spent six decades refusing to be pinned down, moving through folk, rock, gospel, country and the blues. Leo, born in Chicago in 1955, is the first pope from the United States, elected to lead a global church of more than a billion Catholics.

What connects them, beyond the American roots they share, is the language of peace. Dylan wrote "Go Away You Bomb" in 1963, at the height of the Cold War, when the fear of nuclear war shaped daily life. The pope's decision to quote that song in a book on disarmament shows he sees Dylan's early work not as a relic of the 1960s but as a living text, one that still speaks to the world the Church is addressing today.

Reactions and Quotes

The Vatican's own account was brief, describing the meeting as greetings and a few lighthearted exchanges. That restraint fits the tone of a private audience, where the details are rarely made public. The photographs, however, told their own story: Dylan in his customary black, the pope in white, the two men smiling as they shook hands in the Apostolic Palace.

The pope's earlier words about Dylan's music carry more weight than the official account of the meeting. In the preface to "Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift", he used the lines from "Go Away You Bomb" to warn against global rearmament, writing the song into the Church's argument for peace. For a songwriter who has spent a lifetime being quoted, misquoted and argued over, being quoted by a pope in a book on disarmament is a distinction of its own kind.

Why It Matters

The meeting matters because it brings together two figures who rarely share a room, and because it shows how Dylan's early protest songs still carry force more than sixty years after they were written. A pope quoting an unpublished 1963 song in a book on disarmament is not a casual gesture. It is a sign that the Church sees the moral argument of Dylan's music as relevant to the conflicts and arms races of today.

What Happens Next

Dylan performs in Rome on Thursday, November 5, at the Palazzo dello Sport, continuing the Italy leg of his "Rough and Rowdy Ways" tour. The Vatican has not said whether the pope will attend any of the tour's dates, and there has been no suggestion of a public appearance together. The pope's book on disarmament, "Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift", remains in circulation, and the Dylan quotation in its preface is likely to draw new readers to the singer's early protest work.
