The Rheinmetall shares plunge hit as much as 17 per cent in Frankfurt on Thursday, November 5, 2026, after Germany's biggest defence company cut its full-year sales forecast for the second time in three months. The sell-off triggered a brief trading halt and left the stock down about 13 per cent later in the session, the biggest fall on Europe's STOXX 600 index.

The warning centred on Germany's Arminius programme to buy Boxer armoured vehicles. Rheinmetall said the award would not come this year, pushing billions of euros of expected revenue and advance payments into 2027, while slower approvals for artillery ammunition batches will delay more income.

Key Points

• Rheinmetall shares fell as much as 16.3 per cent in Frankfurt on Thursday, triggering a brief trading halt, and were still down about 13 per cent later in the session.
• The company cut its 2026 sales forecast to about €13.2 billion ($14.9 billion), down from €13.7–14.2 billion, and trimmed its operating margin target to about 18.5 per cent.
• It is the second guidance cut in three months, after a reduction in August, and the biggest single-day fall on the STOXX 600.
• Germany's Arminius Boxer armoured-vehicle programme will not be awarded this year, pushing revenue and advance payments into 2027.
• Third-quarter sales were €3.15 billion, with operating profit of €553 million, up 62 per cent year on year.

What Happened

Trading opened sharply lower and kept falling through the morning, with the shares at one point down 16.3 per cent before a brief halt interrupted the slide. By later in the session the stock had steadied at a loss of about 13 per cent, still the worst performance on the STOXX 600 and one of the heaviest single-day falls for a major European defence stock this year.

The trigger was a fresh downgrade of the 2026 outlook. Rheinmetall now expects sales of about €13.2 billion, roughly $14.9 billion, against the €13.7–14.2 billion range it had guided to before. Its operating margin target was trimmed to about 18.5 per cent, from around 19 per cent, and the company abandoned its target for a cash conversion rate above 40 per cent. The quarter itself was strong, but the market treated the guidance cut, not the quarter, as the real news.

Background: From Defence Darling to Doubt

Rheinmetall has been one of Europe's great stock market stories since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Governments across the continent rushed to rebuild arsenals and restock ammunition, and the Düsseldorf-based group, became the default bet on that rearmament. Its order books swelled and its share price multiplied.

The first crack appeared in August, when Rheinmetall cut its guidance for the first time. That warning was cushioned by the Arminius programme, Germany's plan to order large numbers of Boxer armoured vehicles, a deal chief executive Armin Papperger said in August could be worth about €12.4 billion, with an advance payment of more than €3 billion. Thursday's update removed that cushion: the award will not be made in 2026, so the revenue and the advance payment both slip into 2027. Even before Thursday, the shares had already fallen about 35 per cent this year.

Rheinmetall Shares Plunge Puts the Defence Rally Under Strain

The scale of Thursday's fall says as much about expectations as about the numbers. A cut of roughly €700 million from the top of the sales range is small against a €13 billion business, yet the shares fell by a sixth at their worst. That is the reaction of a market that had priced Rheinmetall as a growth stock and is now being asked to price it as a company whose biggest orders can slip by a year.

Investors are questioning the growth outlook, the theme that dominated coverage of the slide. The concern is not that demand for weapons has disappeared — European governments are still spending heavily — but that the path from order to revenue is slower and lumpier than the share price assumed. Ammunition approvals, contract awards and advance payments all depend on government timetables, and those timetables have now slipped twice in three months.

Reactions and Quotes

The market's verdict was swift: a trading halt, a 16.3 per cent intraday fall and the worst showing on the STOXX 600. Coverage focused on investors questioning the growth outlook after the second guidance cut in three months. No fresh comment from Papperger accompanied Thursday's figures beyond the updated outlook itself. In August, Papperger had put Rheinmetall's share of an initial award at about €12.4 billion, with an advance payment above €3 billion — the payment Thursday's update pushed into next year.

Why It Matters

Rheinmetall is not just another German industrial company. It is the largest defence supplier in Europe's biggest economy and a bellwether for the continent's rearmament. When its shares fall 17 per cent on a delayed contract, the signal travels well beyond Frankfurt: Europe's defence spending, for all its scale, is still hostage to procurement delays and political timetables. The fall also matters for Germany, since the Arminius programme is a flagship order of Berlin's military build-up, and its slippage into 2027 means the Bundeswehr's armoured-vehicle renewal moves more slowly than planned.

For shareholders, the stakes are simpler. The stock had already lost about 35 per cent this year before Thursday, and a second guidance cut in three months raises the question of whether the August warning was a one-off or the start of a pattern.

What Happens Next

Attention now turns to 2027. The Arminius award, with its multi-billion-euro advance payment, is expected to land next year, and the pace of artillery ammunition approvals will show whether the delays are administrative or structural. Investors will also watch fourth-quarter results for any sign that guidance has stabilised after two cuts in three months. The wider test is whether other European defence stocks follow Rheinmetall lower or the market treats this as a company-specific problem.
