Washington — The White House again excluded CNN from the presidential press pool on Thursday, November 5, 2026, leaving reporters without television pool coverage. CNN was scheduled to serve as Thursday’s primary television pool outlet, but the network was left off the White House’s daily schedule, and no other broadcaster stepped in to provide the shared video feed. It came just over a week after CNN, MS NOW and Politico expanded their federal lawsuit, accusing the administration of continuing to bar them from pools despite a court order restoring their credentials.

Key Points

• CNN was due to be Thursday’s primary TV pool outlet, but the White House left it off the schedule and no TV pool operated.
• HuffPost correspondent S.V. Dáte wrote: “Be advised that there is no TV pool today because it is CNN’s turn and the president is mad at them.”
• A judge ordered the White House on October 13, 2026, to restore CNN’s credentials, but the network says it is still kept out of pools.
• The TV pool — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC News — rotates filming presidential events so all outlets can use the footage.
• CNN, MS NOW and Politico expanded their lawsuit on October 28, alleging retaliatory exclusion despite the court order.

What Happened

CNN’s turn in the television pool rotation had arrived, and the network would have supplied the cameras and shared video feed for the president’s public events on Thursday. Instead, the White House’s daily schedule simply did not list CNN, and no television pool was assigned at all. The absence was confirmed in the morning pool report filed by HuffPost White House correspondent S.V. Dáte, who wrote plainly: “Be advised that there is no TV pool today because it is CNN’s turn and the president is mad at them.” The report, first noted by TheWrap, left no doubt why the cameras were missing. Without a primary television pool outlet, the wider press corps would have had no shared video feed if President Donald Trump held an event open to pool coverage. The five networks take turns providing one shared camera crew, so when the network whose turn it is is kept out, the public sees less of the president’s day.

The CNN Press Pool Dispute

The fight began on September 18, 2026, when the Trump administration announced new restrictions on CNN’s access to the president. CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued on September 21, arguing that the ban was retaliation for their reporting and a violation of the First Amendment. On October 13, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the White House to restore the outlets’ press credentials, finding they were likely to succeed on their First Amendment and due process claims. But the ruling did not settle the question at the centre of the dispute: whether restoring credentials also requires the White House to include a network in the presidential press pools. The administration says pool access is a separate matter, and it appealed the ruling on October 14.

On October 28, the three outlets expanded their case, accusing the administration of “continued retaliatory and viewpoint-discriminatory deprivation” of access. CNN said it had been excluded from six scheduled Air Force One pool assignments since the September 18 ban; Politico reported being blocked from two out-of-town assignments, and MS NOW said it had not taken part in the secondary television pool at all since the ban took effect. That filing is the backdrop to Thursday’s exclusion. See our coverage of the expanded press access lawsuit and the outlets’ request for a permanent order. About 97 percent of the roughly 5,000 questions put to the president in the Oval Office and aboard Air Force One are asked in pool settings.

Reactions and Quotes

The bluntest reaction came from the pool report itself, widely shared by journalists as a plain-language summary of a dispute the White House usually describes in legal terms. The White House has rejected the outlets’ allegations. An administration official told TheWrap last week that the outlets had no right to demand access to the Oval Office, accused them of inaccurate reporting and repeated the administration’s intention to challenge the earlier ruling. The administration has previously said “the Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office.” CNN’s counsel, Theodore Boutrous, argues the administration is punishing outlets for coverage it dislikes, and the outlets are asking the court to declare the restrictions unlawful and grant permanent injunctive relief restoring their pool access.

Why It Matters

The press pool is one of the least visible but most important parts of White House coverage. It lets the public see and hear the president when he travels, takes questions on Air Force One or speaks in rooms too small for the full press corps. When a network is removed from the rotation, the shared feed every other outlet depends on disappears, and the record of the president’s public words grows thinner. The case also tests how far a president can go in choosing which news organisations cover him: the outlets say the First Amendment bars punishing critical reporting, while the administration says pool access is a privilege it controls.

What Happens Next

The lawsuit continues in federal court, where the outlets seek a permanent order restoring pool access and the administration is appealing Judge Kelly’s October 13 ruling. The pool rotation will keep turning, and the next test will come when CNN’s turn arrives again, or when MS NOW or Politico are next due in a pool. If the White House leaves them out again, the outlets are likely to bring the new exclusions straight back to the judge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was there no television pool on Thursday?
CNN was scheduled to be the primary TV pool outlet, but the White House left the network off its schedule. HuffPost’s S.V. Dáte wrote there was no TV pool “because it is CNN’s turn and the president is mad at them.”

What is the presidential press pool?
A small rotating group of journalists who cover the president’s events for the whole press corps. The TV pool — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC News — takes turns providing a shared video feed all outlets can use.

Did a court not order CNN’s access restored?
Yes. Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the White House on October 13, 2026, to restore the network’s credentials. The ruling did not expressly settle whether CNN must also be included in press pools, and the administration appealed on October 14.

How long has this dispute been going on?
The restrictions were announced on September 18, 2026. CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued on September 21 and expanded the lawsuit on October 28. CNN says it has been barred from six Air Force One pool assignments since the ban began.

What are the outlets asking the court to do now?
They want the court to declare the restrictions unlawful and grant permanent injunctive relief restoring their pool access, while the administration argues pool access is a privilege it controls.
