Iran's parliament speaker has mocked US Vice President JD Vance as a "losing gambler" after Vance blamed the eight-month Iran war for the Republicans' losses in Tuesday's midterm elections. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who was Vance's opposite number at earlier peace talks, fired back on X on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

"Losing gambler energy, can't walk away from the table," Qalibaf wrote. "Boss is prepping the next war phase while America teeters on an Israel-first cliff. Skip the TED talk. Why not say this to your boss?"

The jab landed a day after Vance wrote that "the reason we lost is the war", citing four issues that drove 2024 Trump-Vance voters to the Democrats: ending the war, the cost of living, putting America first, and Israel. President Donald Trump called the assessment "largely true". Qalibaf mocks Vance as a gambler who lost the table and cannot leave it.

Key Points

• Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf mocked Vice President JD Vance on X on Thursday, November 5, calling him a "losing gambler".
• Vance wrote on Wednesday that "the reason we lost is the war", citing a pollster who found 2024 Trump-Vance voters switching to the Democrats.
• President Donald Trump said the assessment was "largely true", blaming the war for higher petrol prices, but said he would do it again.
• Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said US hostility would continue regardless of which party controls Washington.
• Gulf tanker attacks ran at a near-record pace: five vessels hit since Sunday, 35 in October, per UKMTO.

What Happened

Vance's post on Wednesday was unusually blunt for a sitting vice president. He wrote that "the reason we lost is the war", adding that "the president himself said so last night" and that "everyone knows why we lost". He said a pollster he trusts had found that many 2024 Trump-Vance voters had switched to the Democrats, and he challenged his own party to face the cost of the conflict. Democrats captured majorities in both chambers on Tuesday, November 3, winning races in Republican strongholds. Trump did not push back, telling Fox News: "I think a part of it was Iran." Qalibaf answered on Thursday, and within hours his words were being quoted across Iranian state media.

Background and Context

The exchange sits at the intersection of two stories that have dominated the autumn: a war that will not end, and an American election that punished the party that started it. The United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, 2026, and Iran answered with strikes on Israel. The conflict has now run for more than eight months, disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and pushing up energy prices. Qalibaf has been one of Tehran's loudest voices since the vote, posting that Americans had said "NO TO WAR". His latest post sharpens the same argument: the American public has rejected the war, and the vice president has now admitted it. The taunt also comes as US and Iranian representatives meet in Geneva, and a second US carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, heads for the Middle East.

Qalibaf Mocks Vance: 'Losing Gambler Energy'

The phrase Qalibaf chose was deliberately American. "Losing gambler energy" borrows the language of poker and the casino floor, and "can't walk away from the table" paints Vance as a player chasing his losses. The second sentence, about the "boss" preparing "the next war phase", turns the taunt on Trump himself. The reference to an "Israel-first cliff" is the sharpest part: one of the four issues Vance listed was the US relationship with Israel, and Qalibaf seized on it. "Why not say this to your boss?" is the closing dare. Underneath the mockery sits a warning: Qalibaf has said Tehran's response to any American miscalculation would be unpredictable, and Khamenei has warned the war could widen if US attacks resume.

Reactions and Quotes

Trump's response set the tone for the administration. He called the assessment "largely true", blamed the war for lifting petrol prices "a little bit, short term", and said he would do it again and "would have done nothing different". Vance's own words started the row: "The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. Everyone knows why we lost." From Tehran, Khamenei struck a grimmer note, saying US hostility would continue regardless of which party controls Washington. No response from Vance or the White House had been reported by Thursday evening. The silence is telling: the administration is absorbing the scale of its defeat while it decides whether to negotiate or fight on.

Why It Matters

The row matters first because it shows how deeply the war has cut into American politics: a sitting vice president has blamed a war his own administration is fighting for the loss of both chambers of Congress, and the president has agreed. It matters second because it complicates the diplomacy, with nuclear talks under way in Geneva and Tehran now believing it holds the stronger hand. It matters third because the fighting has not stopped: tanker attacks run at a near-record pace, two tankers and a tugboat caught fire on Thursday, November 5, after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and a second American carrier is heading for the region.

What Happens Next

US, Russian and Ukrainian officials are due to resume trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, and the Geneva channel with Iran remains open. The USS Gerald R. Ford is sailing east with four destroyers to join the USS Abraham Lincoln, giving the United States two carrier strike groups near Iran. Trump has said the world will learn his decision on strikes "over the next, likely, 10 days". Inside the Republican Party, the blame game Vance started is only beginning.
