Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is not currently being considered to fill the Tennessee Senate seat that Senator Marsha Blackburn will leave when she becomes governor, the Associated Press reported on Friday, November 6, 2026, ending weeks of speculation about a Pentagon-to-Senate move.

The report, citing a person familiar with the matter, said Blackburn is focused on her transition to the governor's office and dismissed the talk linking Hegseth to her seat as baseless chatter. Representative Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican re-elected on November 3, told the Associated Press he wants to be considered for the seat.

Blackburn, serving her second Senate term, plans to hold the seat until she is sworn in as governor, so she can appoint her own replacement to serve until January 2031.

Key Points

• The Associated Press reported on Friday, November 6, 2026 that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is not being considered for Senator Marsha Blackburn's Tennessee Senate seat.
• Blackburn plans to hold the seat until she is sworn in as governor in January, then appoint her replacement to serve until January 2031.
• Representative Tim Burchett, re-elected on November 3, told the AP he wants the seat, answering "Absolutely. Absolutely."
• Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth is "100 per cent committed to leading the Department until the end of President Trump's term."
• President Donald Trump said on November 4 he is not considering replacing Hegseth, while adding Hegseth "would be very popular" in the seat.

What Happened

The Associated Press report, published on Friday, November 6, 2026, put a firm end to the idea that Hegseth was in line for Blackburn's seat. According to a person familiar with the matter, the defence secretary is not being considered for the appointment, and Blackburn is focused on her transition rather than the succession question. The source called the speculation baseless chatter.

The report came the day after Hegseth posted a video on Thursday, November 5 acknowledging the impeachment threat he faces in the House. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth is "100 per cent committed to leading the Department until the end of President Trump's term", a clear signal he is not seeking a Senate move.

President Trump said on Wednesday, November 4, that he is not considering replacing Hegseth. "I think he's doing a very good job," Trump said, while adding that Hegseth "would be very popular" in the seat.

Background: How the Tennessee Senate Seat Opened Up

The vacancy follows Blackburn's decision to run for governor of Tennessee, a race she won on November 3, 2026. She will leave Washington for Nashville when sworn in as governor in January, and because she plans to hold the Senate seat until then, she will name her own successor to serve until January 2031.

Speculation began in late October, when a Puck column reported Capitol Hill chatter that Hegseth was angling for Blackburn's seat. It gained traction partly because Hegseth lived in Tennessee for three years before joining the Pentagon. Read our earlier report on Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and the speculation over a Tennessee Senate seat.

Hegseth has also faced impeachment articles in the House — eight from Representative Thomas Massie in September and six from Representative Yassamin Ansari with 13 Democratic co-sponsors — which he addressed in his video on Thursday, November 5, saying he would not back down.

Hegseth Tennessee Senate Seat: Why the Speculation Faded

The report matters because it draws on a person close to the process rather than on public posturing. Blackburn's focus, the source said, is on her transition — not on lining up a successor from the Trump administration — suggesting the governor-elect wants the decision made on her own terms rather than through a Washington pressure campaign.

Hegseth's camp has been consistent: Parnell's statement leaves little room for a Senate run and echoes earlier Pentagon denials. In October, Parnell said the department was focused on equipping and supporting troops, and Axios reported on October 19 that claims about Hegseth seeking the seat were "not true" — before the Puck column revived the story.

Reactions

Burchett's declaration was the most direct reaction. Asked whether he wanted to be considered, he answered twice over: "Absolutely. Absolutely." He has not said whether he has spoken to Blackburn about the appointment, but his open interest puts pressure on the governor-elect to weigh a sitting congressman with a strong conservative record. Burchett has represented Tennessee's 2nd District since 2019.

The Pentagon's response was equally direct: spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth is "100 per cent committed to leading the Department until the end of President Trump's term", ruling out a Senate move without closing the door on his longer-term political future. Blackburn's office has not publicly named a preferred successor. Read our report on Hegseth's defiant video responding to the impeachment threat.

Why It Matters

The appointment will shape Tennessee's Senate representation for the next four years: the replacement will serve until January 2031 and arrive in Washington just as the Senate's balance of power has changed. Democrats swept both chambers in the November 3 midterms, so the new senator will join a chamber under new management — and, if a Republican like Burchett, a smaller minority.

It also matters for the Trump administration: Hegseth staying at the Pentagon preserves continuity at the Defence Department while the United States is at war with Iran and its defence secretary faces impeachment pressure. A Senate move would have opened a cabinet vacancy and a confirmation fight; the report takes both off the table.

What Happens Next

Blackburn will be sworn in as governor in January and is expected to name her Senate successor around that time. Until then she will hold the seat, and speculation over who will get it is likely to grow. Burchett has declared himself a candidate; other Tennessee Republicans may follow.

Hegseth remains at the Pentagon, facing the impeachment effort in the House and a war in its ninth month. His video on Thursday, November 5, made clear he intends to fight the impeachment articles rather than seek an exit. Whoever Blackburn names will be sworn in quickly and will face a special election in due course.
