A former FBI agent has been indicted in Brooklyn after prosecutors say he drove his bureau-issued car the wrong way down a busy street, ran a red light, struck a pedestrian and then dragged the unconscious man onto a bench before speeding away without calling for help.

Andrew Reyes, 30, pleaded not guilty on Thursday, November 5, 2026, to federal civil rights and false-statement charges. He was released on a $100,000 bond co-signed by his parents and is due back in court on December 2.

What Happened

According to the indictment, the crash happened at about 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn. Reyes was driving his FBI-issued Chevrolet Impala with its emergency lights on, northbound in the southbound lane, when he ran a red light at Beverley Road and struck a man crossing the street.

The impact knocked the pedestrian unconscious and left him severely injured, prosecutors said. Instead of stopping to help, Reyes dragged the man from the street across the sidewalk and placed him on a bench, according to the indictment. He put the man's bag beside him and sped away, without calling for help or reporting the crash. The victim survived.

Reyes was arrested on the morning of Thursday, November 5, and arraigned that afternoon in Brooklyn federal court before Magistrate Judge Clay H. Kaminsky. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $100,000 bond co-signed by his parents, with his next court date on December 2, 2026.

Background and Context

Reyes had been a special agent with the FBI since 2023, assigned to the bureau's New York Field Office. The indictment, filed on November 2 under docket number 26-CR-306 in the Eastern District of New York, was unsealed on November 5, the day of his arrest.

The case was investigated by the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General. When interviewed on May 1, 2026, Reyes denied that he had ever hit a person with his FBI car and failed to report it, prosecutors said.

That denial is the basis of the false-statement charge: federal law makes it a crime to knowingly lie to a federal investigator, and prosecutors say the evidence contradicts Reyes's account.

FBI Agent Indicted: The Federal Charges Against Andrew Reyes

The indictment contains two counts. The first alleges that Reyes, while acting as an FBI agent, wilfully deprived the pedestrian of his constitutional rights. The second alleges that he made false statements to the Inspector General's office when he denied the crash in his May 1 interview.

Prosecutors have not said whether Reyes was on duty, why he was driving the wrong way with his emergency lights on, or when he left the bureau.

The case is being prosecuted by the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. US Attorney Joseph Nocella announced the charges.

Reactions and Quotes

Nocella said Reyes's alleged conduct betrayed his oath as a federal agent, calling it "a shocking disregard for human life and his sworn oath to uphold the law".

The Justice Department and the FBI offered no further comment beyond the indictment and the arrest announcement. The FBI has not said whether Reyes resigned or was dismissed, and his lawyer has not been publicly identified.

A federal prosecution of one of its own former agents, brought by the Justice Department's own watchdog, is a rare and public rebuke for the bureau.

Why It Matters

The charges go to the core of public trust in law enforcement. A federal agent is given a badge, a gun, a government vehicle and emergency lights because the public trusts him to use them lawfully. Prosecutors say Reyes used that authority to drive the wrong way down a road, then abandoned the man he struck.

The alleged cover-up matters as much as the crash. Reyes did not simply fail to report an accident, prosecutors say — he told federal investigators months later that it had never happened. If proved, that shows a deliberate effort to hide a sworn officer's conduct from the system meant to hold him accountable.

The case also tests how the Justice Department handles misconduct inside its own ranks, and whether it will prosecute a former agent when the evidence supports it.

What Happens Next

Reyes is due back in federal court in Brooklyn on December 2, 2026. Prosecutors and the defence are expected to exchange evidence, and the court will set a schedule for pretrial motions and a possible trial date.

If convicted on both counts, Reyes faces up to 10 years in prison, plus fines and supervised release. A conviction would also leave him with a federal felony record barring any future law enforcement work.

The case will also be watched for what it reveals about the February crash, including how the victim was found and how investigators connected it to Reyes.
