Eight people are dead and another is seriously wounded after a gunman armed with a shotgun went on a shooting spree across three villages in western Türkiye on Thursday, before police captured him alive after a brief shootout. The Afyonkarahisar shooting, which unfolded in the villages of Ayazini, Kıyır and Yukarıtandır, is one of the deadliest gun attacks in Türkiye in recent years. Investigators say the first killings grew out of a dispute over a farm machine.

The suspect, 30-year-old Arif Sefa Özdemir, was detained in Eskişehir, about 100 kilometres north, after police fired on the tyres of his vehicle. Two officers were slightly injured. Police are examining a possible link to an earlier shooting in the city of Afyonkarahisar.

Key Points

• A gunman killed eight people and seriously wounded at least one more across three villages in Afyonkarahisar province, western Türkiye, on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
• Three victims were found in Ayazini and three in nearby Kıyır, while two female teachers, aged 31 and 46, were shot in Yukarıtandır and later died in hospital.
• The suspect, 30-year-old Arif Sefa Özdemir, was captured alive in neighbouring Eskişehir after a brief shootout; two officers were slightly injured.
• Investigators say Özdemir told them he killed the first three victims over a dispute about a combine harvester bought for 40,000 euros, and that the other five were targeted so he could steal their vehicles as he fled.
• Police are examining a possible link to an earlier shooting in central Afyonkarahisar in which a woman sitting in a car was seriously wounded.

What Happened

The violence began on Thursday in the rural villages around Afyonkarahisar, a province in western Türkiye roughly halfway between Ankara and Izmir. Emergency teams found six people dead across Ayazini and Kıyır. Two female teachers, aged 31 and 46, had been shot in Yukarıtandır and later died in hospital. At least one other person was seriously wounded.

Investigators say the first three killings happened near the exit of Ayazini village, where Özdemir had arranged to meet a man named Ahmet Uzel. Uzel arrived with two other men, and after an argument the suspect is accused of opening fire with a pump-action shotgun, killing all three.

Özdemir then fled in a red minivan, allegedly stealing several vehicles along the way. He is said to have posed as an intelligence officer to seize a 19-year-old's car, which later stuck in mud near Eskişehir, before stealing a milk vendor's vehicle. Police tracked him to a rural neighbourhood in Eskişehir, about 100 kilometres north of the shooting sites. When officers moved in, Özdemir reportedly fired at them, slightly injuring one officer in the ear. Police returned fire, shooting out the tyres of his vehicle, and took him into custody alive. A second officer was also slightly injured.

Background and Context

Afyonkarahisar is a largely agricultural province in western Türkiye, known for its thermal springs, marble quarries and farming communities. The villages at the centre of the attack are small rural settlements where violent crime on this scale is almost unheard of. Mass shootings are rare in Türkiye, even though firearms are present in many rural households, and pump-action shotguns are among the most commonly held firearms in the country.

Afyonkarahisar Shooting: What the Suspect Told Police

The clearest account of a motive so far comes from Özdemir's own reported initial statement to investigators. He allegedly told authorities that he killed the first three victims over a financial dispute involving the purchase of a combine harvester. According to that account, he bought the machine from one of the victims, Ahmet Uzel, last year for 40,000 euros. The harvester later caught fire while working in a field in Izmir and became unusable, leaving a dispute over the outstanding payment that allegedly escalated into mutual insults and threats over the phone.

On Thursday, Özdemir allegedly invited Uzel to Afyonkarahisar to settle the debt. Uzel arrived with two other men, and the four met near the exit of Ayazini village. After an argument, Özdemir is accused of opening fire, killing all three. Investigators say the other five victims were then targeted along his escape route so he could steal their vehicles. The two teachers killed in Yukarıtandır were caught up in the flight from the first crime scene. The suspect's account has not yet been tested in court.

Reactions and Official Statements

Turkish authorities confirmed the arrest within hours. The wounded were taken to hospitals in the region. No formal charges had been announced by Friday morning, and officials have not yet released a full list of the victims' names. Prosecutors in Afyonkarahisar are leading the investigation, with officers in Eskişehir assisting.

Why It Matters

The Afyonkarahisar shooting is one of the deadliest single attacks by a lone gunman in Türkiye in recent memory, and its toll has stunned a country where such rampages are rare. The fact that two of the victims were teachers, killed far from the original dispute, underlines how quickly a personal conflict escalated into indiscriminate violence against people who had no connection to it. The case also raises familiar questions about the availability of pump-action shotguns in rural Türkiye and how financial disputes, often settled informally, can turn lethal when a firearm is close at hand.

What Happens Next

Özdemir remains in police custody, and prosecutors are expected to question him further before deciding on formal charges, which in Türkiye would follow a detention hearing before a judge. Murder charges carrying aggravated life sentences are likely if the evidence supports the investigators' account. Forensic teams are working at the three crime scenes, police are tracing the suspect's movements and the vehicles he allegedly stole, and officers are pursuing the possible link to the earlier shooting in central Afyonkarahisar. Funerals for the victims are expected in the coming days.
