Democrats have passed 250 seats in the US House of Representatives, giving the party its biggest majority in the chamber since 2008. CNN's Decision Desk projected on Thursday, November 5, 2026, that Democrats have won more than 250 House seats, a net gain of around 40, completing a midterm sweep that also delivered the Senate. The milestone 250th seat came in Arizona's 1st District, where Democrat Amish Shah flipped a Republican-held seat, the party's 40th pickup of the cycle. Democrats have won or lead in 259 districts, and if those leads hold, the final total could reach 260, their largest majority since 1991. With 27 races still uncalled, Democrats held 253 seats to 155-157 for Republicans, far above the 218 needed for a majority.

What Happened

The count crossed 250 on Thursday, November 5, two days after voters went to the polls on November 3, as counting continued in the races that remained uncalled. The seat that took Democrats past the milestone was Arizona's 1st District, covering Scottsdale and parts of the Phoenix area, where Decision Desk HQ called the race for Shah at 8:39 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 4.

Shah, a 48-year-old emergency medicine physician, defeated Republican Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker endorsed by President Donald Trump, by 52.49% to 45.45%, a margin of about 22,494 votes. The win was the Democrats' 40th pickup of the cycle. Shah becomes the first Indian-American to represent Arizona in Congress and the sixth Indian-American elected to the House; he previously served three terms in the Arizona House and campaigned on lowering costs, expanding healthcare coverage and addressing the water crisis.

The party flipped 52 of the 234 districts Trump won in 2024, winning more than 30 Republican-held districts, including in Montana, Virginia and Arizona. As of November 5, with 27 races uncalled, Democrats held 253 seats to 155-157 for Republicans.

Background: The Last Time Democrats Held This Many Seats

The last time Democrats held a majority this large was after the 2008 election, when the party won 257 seats under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, riding Barack Obama's presidential victory and the financial crisis. That majority narrowed sharply in the 2010 midterms, when Republicans gained 63 seats, and Democrats have not come close to 250 since.

The 2026 result reverses that long stretch. Republicans held the House for most of the years since 2010, and the chamber has been narrowly divided in recent cycles. A majority above 250 changes that arithmetic, giving the winning party room to lose dozens of votes on any bill and still pass it. Democrats also won the Senate, 54 seats to 44, with Mississippi and Alaska still to be called. The new Congress convenes in January 2027.

Democrats' 250 House Seats Reshape Washington

A majority above 250 gives Democrats firm control of the House floor, its committees and its schedule. The majority party decides which bills reach a vote, chairs every committee, controls subpoena power and sets the terms of oversight of the executive branch.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become speaker, which would make him the first Black speaker of the House. The party's leadership team will run the floor schedule, while committee chairs gain the power to open investigations and demand documents from the administration.

The result also sets up divided government. With a Republican in the White House and Democrats controlling both chambers, the president's agenda will need Democratic support to move, and Democratic priorities will need his signature to become law.

Reactions and Quotes

Shah marked his win with a message to Arizona voters on X, writing: "Arizona, it's the honour of my lifetime to be your next congressman." He added: "Let's end the political toxicity," echoing his campaign's call to lower the temperature of American politics.

For Democrats, the milestone confirmed what early returns had suggested: a broad rejection of Republican candidates that reached deep into districts Trump carried two years earlier. The gains spanned the map, from Montana to Virginia to Arizona. The count is not yet final, but the direction of the result is no longer in doubt.

Why It Matters

A House majority above 250 is the largest Democratic majority in a generation, and it changes what the party can do. With a cushion of more than 30 seats above the majority line, leaders can afford defections from their own ranks and still pass legislation, a freedom narrow majorities do not have.

It also gives Democrats a powerful check on the presidency: the power to investigate the administration, demand testimony and documents, and set the public agenda through hearings. Combined with the Senate majority, it gives the party a platform to advance its agenda on healthcare, costs and veterans' benefits, and to block measures it opposes. The result will also shape the 2028 presidential race.

What Happens Next

Counting continues in the 27 House races that remain uncalled, and the final Democratic total could reach 260 if current leads hold. The Senate picture will be completed once Mississippi and Alaska are called.

The new Congress convenes in January 2027, when the House will elect its speaker and the new majority takes control of the committees. Until then, the outgoing Republican-led House remains in session. Attention now turns to how Democrats use their majority: which bills reach the floor first, how they handle oversight, and whether the parties can find common ground on spending and other must-pass bills.
