Missouri state Representative Anthony Ealy Jr. was arrested in Jefferson City on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, one day after voters in his Grandview district returned him to a third term in the Missouri House. Police say the 32-year-old Democrat threatened to kill a man outside a business on East Capitol Avenue, in an incident that disrupted a funeral service taking place inside.

Ealy, who represents District 36 in Jackson County, won reelection on Tuesday, November 3, with about 68 percent of the vote. Less than 24 hours later, he was booked into the Cole County Jail and held without bond, and formal charges of fourth-degree assault and disturbing the peace were filed on Thursday, November 5.

What Happened

Police were called to the 600 block of East Capitol Avenue at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday after multiple witnesses reported a man yelling and causing a disturbance outside a business. Officers found Ealy at the scene, and the incident report describes a confrontation that escalated quickly in front of bystanders.

According to the probable-cause statement, Ealy trespassed on the property, stepped toward a man and referenced a gun before telling him "I'm going to kill you" twice. The confrontation took place outside a business where a family was making funeral arrangements, and the disturbance interrupted that service. Ealy was booked into the Cole County Jail at 11:57 a.m. and held without bond. The incident report noted that he appeared to be having a panic attack or a mental health crisis, and no injuries were reported.

Background and Context

Ealy has represented Grandview, in Jackson County, since first winning the District 36 seat, and Tuesday's result gave him a third term with roughly two-thirds of the vote. The district covers part of the Kansas City area, and his reelection came on a night when Missouri Democrats made gains in the state legislature, including breaking the Republican supermajority in the House.

The arrest did not surprise the people who work with Ealy in the Capitol. In spring 2026, House Democratic leadership removed him from all committee assignments so he could address personal issues, and asked him to consider letting someone else run for the seat. He ran anyway and won by a wide margin. Leadership has said it will not reinstate his assignments for the 2027 session.

Missouri Lawmaker Arrested a Day After Reelection Win

The timing is what makes this case stand out: Ealy was taken into custody the morning after an election night victory, a sequence rarely, if ever, seen in Missouri politics. He was booked, held without bond and charged within 48 hours, reflecting how seriously police and prosecutors treated a threat made in public, in front of witnesses. The two charges are both misdemeanors under Missouri law: fourth-degree assault carries a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine, and disturbing the peace carries up to six months and a $1,000 fine.

Reactions and Quotes

The most direct account comes from the police paperwork. The probable-cause statement records the words witnesses heard: Ealy told the man "I'm going to kill you" twice, after stepping toward him and referencing a gun. That account, and the incident report's note that Ealy appeared to be having a panic attack or a mental health crisis, are the only official descriptions released so far. Leadership has announced no new action since the arrest, and no statement from Ealy or his attorney appeared in the initial reports.

Why It Matters

The case matters because it involves a sitting lawmaker, freshly reelected, accused of a public threat of violence. Voters in District 36 chose Ealy with about 68 percent of the vote on Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning he was in the Cole County Jail. That whiplash raises questions about who represents Grandview in Jefferson City, and how the legislature handles a member facing criminal charges. It also matters because leadership had already stripped his committee assignments and asked him to consider not running, so the arrest forces the House to confront a situation it had tried to manage quietly in the spring.

What Happens Next

The criminal case will proceed in Cole County, where the misdemeanor charges were filed on Thursday. Ealy will have the chance to answer the charges in court, and, as with any defendant, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The first court dates will set the timetable for a case that could still be active when the legislature convenes in January. Separately, the House must decide how to handle a member just reelected with no committee assignments and now facing criminal charges, and whether Ealy takes his seat will be among the first decisions of the new session.
