Kaitlynn Berman, 23, stood in a Bronx courtroom on Wednesday and watched the man who stabbed her 22 times learn his punishment: eight and a half years in prison. Then she was sick. As Judge Timothy Lewis read out the sentence, Berman vomited in court — a raw, involuntary measure of the trauma she still carries more than a year and a half after the March 2025 attack inside her Wakefield apartment, while her three-year-old daughter was in the next room.

The sentence, handed down in Bronx Supreme Court on November 4, 2026, was shorter than the 10 years prosecutors had sought. Berman's supporters immediately called it far too light and say they plan to challenge it. Christopher Joseph, 23, pleaded guilty in September to second-degree attempted murder. He also received five years of post-release supervision and an order of protection barring him from contacting Berman.

Key Points

• Christopher Joseph, 23, got eight and a half years in prison for stabbing Kaitlynn Berman about 22 times in March 2025.
• Berman, 23, vomited in the Bronx courtroom as Judge Timothy Lewis read the sentence, after a 15-minute victim impact statement.
• Her three-year-old daughter was in the next room during the attack inside Berman's Wakefield apartment.
• Berman spent 48 days in hospital, had three surgeries and multiple blood transfusions, and now has PTSD and nerve damage in both hands.
• Prosecutors had sought 10 years; Berman's supporters called the sentence far too light and plan to challenge it.

What Happened

The attack took place in March 2025 inside Berman's apartment in Wakefield, in the Bronx. Berman was pet-sitting a friend's cat when Joseph, her friend's boyfriend, came to pick up the animal. He invited himself inside, then told Berman his girlfriend had permitted him to have sex with her. When she refused, he attacked without warning.

Joseph stabbed Berman about 22 times in the face, neck, hands and abdomen. He slashed her throat, cut her below her right eye and across her nose, and left her fighting for her life while her three-year-old daughter was in the next room. Before leaving, he stole her cell phone and $5,700 in cash. Police later caught him blood-soaked at a nearby subway station.

Berman survived, but only after 48 days at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, three surgeries and multiple blood transfusions. She now has post-traumatic stress disorder and nerve damage in both hands — injuries that shape her daily life.

Background and Context

The case moved slowly through the courts, and one detail of that delay has drawn particular anger from Berman's supporters. Joseph had been released without bail in December 2025 after his lawyer moved on an unanswered email about outstanding evidence. He remained free for months before pleading guilty to second-degree attempted murder in September 2026.

That sequence — a violent attack, a long hospital stay, and a defendant free on no bail while the victim recovered — is part of why the sentencing hearing carried so much emotion. Berman's 15-minute victim impact statement was the centrepiece of the hearing. "You failed to take my life, and you won't take away my future," she told Joseph, according to the New York Post.

Bronx Woman Stabbed 22 Times: A Sentence Her Supporters Call Too Light

The reaction in the courtroom said as much as the sentence itself. Berman vomited as the term was read out, and her supporters described the punishment as far too light for the scale of the violence. They plan to challenge the sentence, though the options are limited: any appeal would need to identify a legal error, not just disagree with the judge.

For Berman's family and supporters, the message of the sentence matters most: a man who stabbed a woman 22 times, slashed her throat and stole from her as she bled will be free again before the decade is out, subject to five years of post-release supervision. The order of protection means Joseph is barred from contacting Berman after his release.

Reactions and Quotes

Berman's victim impact statement was the most direct account of what the attack cost her. "You failed to take my life, and you won't take away my future," she said in court, in a statement that lasted about 15 minutes. The words were aimed at Joseph, who sat in court as she described the attack, the surgeries and the lasting damage.

Her supporters were blunt about the sentence. They called it far too light and said they plan to challenge it, a response that reflects the anger many in the courtroom felt as the term was read out. Prosecutors, who had sought 10 years, did not publicly comment on the final figure after the hearing.

Why It Matters

This case matters because it puts a public spotlight on how New York courts handle violent attacks on women in their own homes. Berman was attacked by someone she knew — the boyfriend of a friend — in a setting where she had every reason to feel safe. Her daughter was in the next room.

It also raises questions about bail and delay. Joseph was released without bail in December 2025, months after the attack, because of an unanswered email about outstanding evidence. Victims' advocates have long argued that procedural delays and release decisions can leave survivors feeling that the system moved faster for the accused than for them.

What Happens Next

Joseph will begin serving his eight-and-a-half-year prison term, followed by five years of post-release supervision. The order of protection remains in place, barring him from contacting Berman. Berman's supporters say they plan to challenge the sentence, though no formal filing has been announced. Berman has said her priority is recovery and her daughter.
