One cyclist was killed and 22 others were injured on Saturday morning when a 76-year-old driver crossed the centre line and struck a group of riders on a quiet two-lane road in Wake County, North Carolina. The Wake County cyclists crash happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, about 14 miles southwest of Raleigh.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the vehicle crossed the centre line before hitting the cyclists, then continued away from the scene and ran off the road into a ditch. Seven of the injured were taken to trauma centres and 15 others to local hospitals, Holly Springs Fire Chief LeRoy Smith told CNN. The driver, 76-year-old Donald Robert Morris-Jones of Apex, is in custody awaiting charges, with impairment a suspected factor.

What Happened

The cyclists were riding together on a wooded two-lane road in southern Wake County when the crash happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. The road, about 14 miles southwest of Raleigh, is the kind of quiet rural route cycling groups use for weekend rides, with tree cover on both sides and little traffic on a Saturday morning.

According to the Highway Patrol, the vehicle crossed the centre line and struck the group, then continued away from the scene before running off the roadway into a ditch. Emergency crews found casualties spread along the roadside, and video from the scene showed a stack of bicycles propped against a guardrail.

Fire crews, paramedics and officers worked through the morning to treat the injured and move them to hospitals across the Raleigh area. Seven people went to trauma centres and 15 to local hospitals, Smith told CNN. The name of the cyclist who was killed has not been released, pending notification of family.

Background and Context

Wake County, home to Raleigh and fast-growing suburbs such as Apex and Holly Springs, has seen its roads grow busier as the population has boomed. The crash happened on a rural two-lane road where suburban traffic meets country lanes long popular with cyclists.

Group rides are a fixture of weekend cycling in North Carolina, with riders travelling together for safety and companionship. But a group is also more exposed when a vehicle leaves its lane: one car crossing the centre line can strike many riders at once. State law requires drivers to give cyclists space when passing, yet two-lane rural roads often have no shoulder, leaving riders little room to escape.

Wake County Cyclists Crash: What We Know About the Driver and the Investigation

The driver was identified as Donald Robert Morris-Jones, 76, of Apex. He is in custody awaiting charges, the Highway Patrol said. Officials have not announced what charges he will face, and no court date has been made public.

Investigators must establish why the vehicle crossed the centre line, whether impairment played a role, and what happened after the impact. Troopers will examine the vehicle, interview witnesses and await toxicology results. Impairment is a suspected factor, investigators said, but that is an early assessment, not a conclusion. Depending on the findings, charges in North Carolina can range from misdemeanour death by vehicle to felony counts.

Reactions and Statements

The Highway Patrol confirmed the basic facts on Saturday, saying the vehicle crossed the centre line before striking the cyclists and then ran off the road into a ditch. It has not released further details about the driver or said when charges will be announced.

Fire Chief LeRoy Smith gave the first detailed account of the casualties, telling CNN that seven people went to trauma centres and 15 to local hospitals. No statement has been released by the driver's family, and no lawyer for him has been identified.

Why It Matters

The crash shows how vulnerable cyclists are on roads designed mainly for cars. A group ride offers safety in numbers, but it cannot protect riders from a vehicle that crosses the centre line. On a two-lane road with no shoulder, the consequences can be catastrophic, as Saturday's toll of one dead and 22 injured shows.

The suspected impairment angle also matters. If confirmed, the case will join a long list of crashes in which a preventable decision behind the wheel turned a routine morning into a tragedy for dozens of families. For the cycling community, it is likely to renew calls for wider shoulders, better separation between cars and bikes, and stronger enforcement of laws that protect cyclists.

What Happens Next

The Highway Patrol investigation will continue in the coming days, with charges against Morris-Jones expected once initial work is complete. Toxicology results, vehicle inspections and witness interviews will shape the charging decision, and Wake County prosecutors will decide whether the case goes forward as a misdemeanour or felony matter.

Hospitals are expected to update the conditions of the injured, and officials are expected to release the name of the cyclist who was killed once family has been notified.
