President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia used North Korean-made KN-23 ballistic missiles to hit one of Ukraine's key energy facilities in the overnight attack on Kyiv, a finding that puts Pyongyang's weapons at the centre of the heaviest bombardment of the capital. The KN-23 missiles were identified in preliminary examinations of the strike sites, Zelenskyy said on Saturday, November 7, 2026, as Ukraine counted the damage from a barrage that overwhelmed its air defences.

Ukraine intercepted only four of the 36 ballistic missiles Russia fired at Kyiv and its region, about 11 percent, exposing an acute shortage of interceptors for its United States-made Patriot air defence systems. Zelenskyy used the result to press Washington to increase its flagging military aid.

Key Points

• Zelenskyy said preliminary examinations show Russia used North Korean KN-23 short-range ballistic missiles to strike a key Ukrainian energy facility overnight.
• Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and its region, and Ukrainian air defences intercepted only four of them, about 11 percent.
• The barrage included 172 drones, killed at least two people, wounded a dozen, and damaged energy facilities and Kyiv's Northern Bridge.
• Power was cut in five regions, and systems carrying electricity from two nuclear power plants were seriously damaged.
• Zelenskyy urged Washington to increase its flagging aid, pointing to a shortage of interceptors for US-made Patriot systems.

What Happened

The attack came overnight into Saturday, November 7, 2026, when Russia launched 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and its region alongside 172 drones fired across the country. Sirens sounded through the night as explosions shook the capital and fires broke out at energy sites. At least two people were killed and about a dozen were wounded.

Energy facilities were hit, Kyiv's Northern Bridge was damaged, and consumers in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions lost power. Systems carrying power from two nuclear power plants were seriously damaged. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko called the energy situation in the capital "extremely difficult" as engineers raced to restore supply.

Zelenskyy said the first forensic findings pointed to a weapon Ukraine has seen before but rarely in such a prominent role: the KN-23, a North Korean short-range ballistic missile. He said the missiles were manufactured and supplied by North Korea and used against the energy facility, and presented the finding as further evidence that Russia's war now depends on weapons from Pyongyang.

Background and Context

This is a follow-up to the overnight barrage itself, which US News Pulse reported on Saturday as Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones, wounding nine people across Ukraine and pushing the death toll from the earlier Komyshuvakha aid-site strike to 55. The news is not the scale of the attack but what was found in its wreckage: North Korean missile fingerprints on a strike against civilian energy infrastructure.

Russia first fired North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine in early 2024, according to Western assessments, and Kyiv has since documented their use in a string of attacks. The missiles give Moscow a cheap, plentiful addition to its own arsenal at a time when its stocks of precision weapons have been strained by more than four years of war.

The timing matters. The strikes came days before US-brokered trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States are due to resume in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11. Russia's message, delivered through a night of fire over Kyiv, was that it can still strike the capital at will.

KN-23 Missiles: What We Know About North Korea's Weapon

The KN-23, known in North Korea as the Hwasong-11A, is a solid-fuel short-range ballistic missile with a top range of about 690 kilometres, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Solid fuel makes it faster to launch and harder to detect, and its manoeuvrable flight path complicates interception.

That profile helps explain the night's interception figures. Ukraine's air defences shot down only four of the 36 ballistic missiles fired, and Zelenskyy tied the result directly to a shortage of interceptors for the Patriot systems the United States supplied. Patriot batteries are Ukraine's main defence against ballistic missiles, and each interception consumes an interceptor that is expensive, slow to replace and in short supply.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had struck military-industrial, energy and transport targets in and around Kyiv. It did not mention the KN-23 or North Korea. Moscow has never confirmed using North Korean missiles, even as Ukrainian investigators have recovered KN-23 debris since 2024.

Reactions

Zelenskyy framed the finding as an appeal as much as an accusation. He said Ukraine has had "a number of good conversations" with the United States, but urged Washington to increase its flagging aid; the interception figures gave his plea a stark number: four of 36. Without more interceptors, he warned, nights like this one will keep coming.

Why It Matters

The KN-23 finding matters because it shows how far Russia's war effort now reaches beyond its own borders. A war that began as a Russian invasion is increasingly fought with North Korean missiles,, and every strike on a Ukrainian power station demonstrates a weapons partnership Western sanctions were meant to prevent.

It also matters for the talks ahead. The Abu Dhabi talks open on Tuesday with Russia having shown it can overwhelm Kyiv's defences, and Ukraine having shown its defences are running short. The balance of the battlefield, and of the bargaining table, will turn on whether the United States answers Zelenskyy's call for more interceptors.

What Happens Next

Engineers in Kyiv and across the five affected regions will work through the weekend to restore power, while investigators complete their examination of the strike sites and confirm the KN-23 identification. Ukrainian officials are expected to share the debris evidence with Western partners.

Diplomatically, the focus shifts to Abu Dhabi, where the trilateral talks resume on November 10-11. The KN-23 finding is likely to feature in Ukraine's case for more air defence aid, and in its argument that any settlement must reckon with a Russia deepening its military ties to Pyongyang.
