Jalen Johnson made a statement in his first game back. The Atlanta Hawks forward scored 30 points in his return from an ankle injury on Saturday night, including 12 in the fourth quarter, as Atlanta erased a 17-point deficit to beat the Brooklyn Nets 124-121 at State Farm Arena. The win was the Hawks' fourth in a row and lifted them to 6-4, while Brooklyn dropped to 2-6 in the young NBA season.

Johnson had missed three games after spraining his left ankle in the Hawks' loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Halloween. Listed as probable on the day of the game, he was upgraded to available shortly before tipoff and shot 11 of 17 from the field with seven rebounds and six assists.

Key Points

• Jalen Johnson scored 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting, with seven rebounds and six assists, in his return after missing three games with a sprained left ankle.
• Atlanta trailed by as many as 17 points in the first quarter before rallying; Johnson scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and put the Hawks ahead for good.
• With 39 seconds left, Johnson drove past Julius Randle for a floater, drew the foul and made the free throw to seal the 124-121 win.
• Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Aaron Wiggins scored 20 points each for Atlanta, while Michael Porter Jr. led Brooklyn with 25 points.
• The Hawks improved to 6-4 with their fourth straight win; the Nets fell to 2-6.

What Happened

The night started badly for Atlanta. Brooklyn came out sharp and built a lead that stretched to 17 points in the first quarter, punishing the Hawks' slow start and threatening to turn the evening into a rout. The Nets moved the ball well and found open looks against a Hawks team welcoming back its star forward.

Atlanta steadied itself as the game wore on, chipping away at the deficit through the middle quarters. Johnson found his rhythm after a week on the sidelines, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Aaron Wiggins each scored 20 points, giving Atlanta scoring from more than one spot as the gap narrowed.

The fourth quarter belonged to Johnson. He scored 12 points in the final period, repeatedly attacking the basket. With the game in the balance in the closing minute, he raced past Julius Randle, tossed in a floater while being fouled, and made the free throw to put the Hawks in front for good. Brooklyn had one last chance to answer, but Atlanta held firm in the final seconds to close out the 124-121 win.

Background and Context

Johnson's absence had been a real concern for Atlanta. He sprained his left ankle in the Hawks' loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Halloween and had not played in a week, sitting out three games while the team tried to keep its early-season momentum without him. The Hawks managed in his absence, but his return was the story of the night, and the way he played suggested the ankle is no longer a problem.

The 24-year-old was taken by the Hawks as the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He earned his first All-Star nod last season, averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game, and is averaging 18.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.9 assists this season. Saturday's performance was a reminder of how much Atlanta's attack runs through him.

Jalen Johnson's 30-Point Return Powers Hawks Past Nets 124-121

The headline numbers tell the story of Johnson's night: 30 points, 11-of-17 shooting, seven rebounds, six assists and the game-winning play. The context makes it more impressive. He had not played in a week, he was only upgraded from probable to available shortly before tipoff, and his team was down 17 points in the first quarter. None of that showed in his performance.

Johnson's fourth quarter was the difference. His 12 points in the final period came when Atlanta needed every one of them, and the decisive sequence, the drive past Randle, the floater, the foul and the free throw, was the kind of play that defines a game. It was the Hawks' best player taking responsibility in the biggest moment of the night and delivering.

The win also continued a run of form that is starting to look like more than a hot streak. Atlanta has now won four games in a row and sits at 6-4. The Hawks' 108-104 win over the Indiana Pacers earlier in the week showed the same resilience, with Alexander-Walker scoring 34 in that game.

Reactions

The result said plenty on its own. A 17-point comeback at home, a star returning from injury to score 30, and a fourth straight win add up to a night the Hawks will take a lot from. Johnson's performance answered the only question that mattered before tipoff, whether the ankle would hold up, and the answer was emphatic.

Why It Matters

Early-season games count the same as late ones, and the Hawks are banking wins while their star is healthy again. At 6-4 with four straight victories, Atlanta is building a cushion in the Eastern Conference and establishing an identity as a team that does not quit when it falls behind. The 17-point comeback against Brooklyn is the kind of win that can shape a season.

Johnson's health is the bigger story underneath the result. The Hawks are a different team with him on the floor, and if he stays healthy, Atlanta has a genuine two-way star to build around. The Nets, meanwhile, are heading in the opposite direction at 2-6, already chasing the pack after losing a game they led by 17.

What Happens Next

The Hawks will look to extend their winning run in their next outing, with Johnson now back in the lineup and the team playing with confidence. The test will be whether they can keep the same intensity from the opening tip rather than relying on another comeback, but a four-game winning streak is a good place to build from.

Brooklyn will try to regroup and fix the late-game execution that cost it on Saturday, while around the league the Lakers' 138-117 win over the Miami Heat earlier in the week showed the early season is already producing surprises. For Atlanta, the message of the night was simple: their best player is back, and the Hawks are winning.
