The San Antonio Spurs made it eight wins in a row on Saturday night, and the Spurs Trail Blazers 125-103 final at Moda Center in Portland was barely a contest after halftime. Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points in just 24 minutes, a day after rolling his ankle on Friday, as San Antonio led by as many as 35 points and improved to 8-2. The Spurs won the second quarter 42-29 and the third 45-27, turning a close game into a rout before a 27-16 fourth quarter in garbage time.

Spurs Trail Blazers 125-103: How San Antonio Took Control

San Antonio seized control in the second quarter, outscoring Portland 42-29 with Wembanyama doing damage inside and out, and went into the break with a lead it would never give back. The third quarter was even more one-sided: a 45-27 frame that stretched the advantage to 109-76 entering the fourth, and the margin reached 35 points before the benches emptied.

Wembanyama's line was the story of the night: 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting, three three-pointers, eight of nine free throws, seven rebounds and three assists, all in 24 minutes. It was the efficient, complete performance that has defined his season, and it came less than 24 hours after he rolled his ankle in Friday's win over Sacramento and still finished that game. The Spurs did not need him for long on Saturday: by the fourth quarter, the result was settled.

Vassell scored 15 points, and Castle filled the box score with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Portland could not find a rhythm from deep: the Blazers finished 9-of-35 from three, and Avdija and Lillard managed 15 points apiece as the offence stalled against San Antonio's defence. Portland won the fourth quarter 27-16, but only after the Spurs had emptied their bench and the game was long decided.

Background: An Ankle Scare, a Seven-Game Streak and a Road Trip

The win carried extra weight because of the night before. Wembanyama rolled his ankle during Friday's 124-109 win over the Sacramento Kings, a game in which he scored 30 points, and finished it despite the scare. That victory was San Antonio's seventh in a row. On Saturday, any doubt about the ankle vanished quickly: Wembanyama moved freely, blocked shots, hit threes and finished at the rim, and was done for the night before the fourth quarter.

The streak is the story of San Antonio's season so far. The Spurs have won eight straight, improving to 8-2, and the run includes Friday's win over Sacramento and a 121-111 victory over Minnesota in which Wembanyama scored 43 points. Saturday's win also moved the Spurs to 2-0 on their road trip. Portland, at 6-3, remains solid, but ran into a Spurs side that expects to win every night.

Reactions: What the Box Score Says

No post-game quotes were included in the game reports, so the clearest reactions on Saturday came from the numbers. Wembanyama's 29 points in 24 minutes works out to more than a point a minute, and his 9-of-13 shooting shows a player scoring efficiently from every spot on the floor. The seven rebounds and three assists round out a line that needed no extra minutes to make its point.

The team numbers tell the rest. San Antonio's 42-29 second quarter and 45-27 third add up to an 87-56 middle two quarters, the kind of sustained dominance that turns a road game into a comfortable evening. Portland's 9-of-35 from three, just under 26 per cent, explains why the Blazers could never climb back in. For the Spurs, the most encouraging number may be the minutes: their star played only 24, and the team still won by 22.

Why It Matters

Saturday's result matters first because of the streak. Eight straight wins is not a hot week; it is a statement, and doing it on the road, in Portland, against a 6-3 team, makes it louder. The Spurs are 8-2, and they are winning in different ways: 43 points from Wembanyama against Minnesota, 30 against Sacramento, and now 29 in 24 minutes in Portland. That variety separates a good stretch from a team that can sustain it.

It matters too because of how the Spurs won. A team that can rest its star in the fourth quarter of a road game has depth, and Vassell and Castle showed it. It matters for Portland as well: the Blazers' 9-of-35 night from three is a reminder that their offence can go cold against a long, disciplined defence, and a 22-point home defeat will sting. For San Antonio, the ankle scare from Friday night is now a footnote, and the streak rolls on.

What Happens Next

The Spurs do not get long to enjoy this one. San Antonio visits the Phoenix Suns on Monday, November 9, and the Suns will be confident after their own Saturday win, a 102-99 upset of Houston in Phoenix. That game will test whether the Spurs can keep the streak alive against a team that has just beaten one of the league's best.

Portland hosts the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, November 10, a tough assignment for a team looking to bounce back from a heavy home defeat. The Blazers will want a better shooting night than 9-of-35 from three, and Lillard and Avdija will need more help. For the Spurs, the question is simpler: keep winning, keep the minutes down, and see how long eight in a row can become.
