The United Arab Emirates rescued all 22 crew members of a cargo ship that caught fire in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, the country's National Guard said, in the latest maritime emergency in one of the world's most closely watched waterways.

The Coast Guard Division of the UAE National Guard Command said the 22 crew members, all Arab nationals, were in stable condition after the Gulf of Oman cargo ship fire. The crew received first aid before being handed over to the relevant authorities, the National Guard said in a statement carried by WAM on Sunday, November 8, 2026.

Key Points

• The UAE Coast Guard rescued all 22 crew members after a fire broke out aboard a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, November 8, 2026.
• All 22 are Arab nationals and are in stable condition, according to the UAE National Guard.
• The crew reported the fire themselves; specialised teams located the vessel, evacuated everyone on board and gave first aid.
• The National Guard did not name the ship or its flag, and did not say what caused the fire.
• The rescue came a day after US forces disabled the cargo vessel M/V Huda in the same waters and Iran's Revolutionary Guard said two tankers had hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

What Happened

The Coast Guard Division received the crew's report of a fire on board, and teams responded immediately, located the vessel and rescued all 22 crew members.

The National Guard did not say how far from shore the ship was, how long the rescue took, or where the crew were taken. Every person on board was brought to safety, and none was reported injured.

Gulf of Oman Cargo Ship Fire: What We Know So Far

A fire broke out aboard a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The crew reported it to the UAE Coast Guard, specialised teams located the vessel and rescued all 22 crew members, and the survivors received first aid before being handed to the relevant authorities.

The cause has not been announced, and the National Guard gave no indication of where the fire started. The ship has not been named, so its route, cargo and flag are not yet public.

Background: A Tense Waterway

The rescue took place against a tense backdrop in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, where the United States and Iran have been at war since February 28, 2026. Merchant vessels there are caught between a US naval blockade of Iran and Iranian military activity.

Only a day earlier, on Saturday, November 7, US Central Command said its forces had disabled the St. Kitts-flagged cargo vessel M/V Huda in the Gulf of Oman after its crew repeatedly ignored warnings and tried to breach the blockade. A US military aircraft fired precision munitions at the ship's stern, the fifth merchant ship disabled since the blockade began in July; 147 vessels that complied were redirected.

The same day, Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy said two commercial ships had hit mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre reported a separate incident involving a bulk carrier and military forces about 18 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan. Officials have not linked the cargo ship fire to any of these incidents, but the timing explains why the rescue drew immediate attention.

The UAE has done this before: on October 10, it rescued 22 Asian nationals from an oil tanker fire in the Arabian Gulf.

Reactions and Official Statements

The UAE National Guard announced the rescue in a statement carried by WAM on Sunday. It said: "The Coast Guard Division of the UAE National Guard Command announced that all 22 crew members, who were of Arab nationalities, are in stable condition after being rescued when a fire broke out aboard a cargo ship in the Sea of Oman."

The statement added that the crew "received first aid before being handed over to the relevant authorities" and that "specialised teams immediately responded, located the vessel and rescued all 22 crew members." The National Guard said the operation "underscores the high level of readiness and operational efficiency" of its personnel.

Why It Matters

The rescue matters first because 22 people are alive. It also matters because of where it happened: the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz carry a large share of the world's seaborne oil and a heavy flow of cargo between Asia, the Middle East and Europe, so every incident there raises questions for shipping companies, insurers and energy markets.

The rescue is also a reminder that the dangers facing crews in these waters are not only military: a fire in an engine room or a cargo hold can kill just as surely as a missile. For the UAE, at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, a clean rescue a day after a US strike in the same gulf shows its maritime emergency services can operate at full speed even while the region is in turmoil.

What Happens Next

The cause of the fire will need to be established, usually through an inspection of the vessel, interviews with the crew and a review of the ship's logs, a process that can take days or weeks. It is not yet known whether the vessel was towed to a UAE port or left under watch. The rescued crew will be looked after by the relevant authorities, who will arrange onward travel and medical checks.
