Binance chief financial officer Kaiser Ng is leaving the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange barely a week after hackers stole $6.3 billion from its users in the largest crypto heist on record, the company announced on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Ng, Binance CFO since January 2022, is being replaced with immediate effect by Justin Yek, a longtime finance executive most recently vice-president of finance at payments platform Airwallex. The departure lands at a delicate moment, with the exchange still working to restore confidence after the record theft, even as its leadership insists the exit was planned long before the attack.

Key Points

• Binance announced on Saturday, November 7, 2026, that chief financial officer Kaiser Ng is leaving to "pursue a new venture" after more than five years.
• Justin Yek, most recently vice-president of finance at Airwallex, replaces Ng with immediate effect.
• Co-CEO Yi He said a transition plan had been "implemented over the last half year" — planned, not fallout from the hack.
• The departure comes barely a week after hackers stole $6.3 billion from Binance users in the largest crypto heist on record.
• Binance said it set aside about $6.34 billion to cover losses, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain so far.

What Happened

Binance confirmed the change on Saturday, saying Ng was leaving to pursue a new venture. The announcement gave no departure date beyond the immediate handover, and Yek stepped into the role the same day. Ng had been the exchange's chief financial officer since January 2022, a period in which Binance grew into the dominant venue for global crypto trading while facing intense scrutiny from regulators in the United States and elsewhere.

His successor, Justin Yek, arrives from Airwallex, the cross-border payments platform, where he served as vice-president of finance. Yek is described as a longtime finance executive, and his background in payments and regulated financial services is likely to matter as Binance rebuilds trust with users, banks and regulators after the hack. Binance did not disclose the terms of Ng's departure or Yek's appointment.

Background and Context

The timing of the announcement is impossible to ignore. Barely a week earlier, hackers stole $6.3 billion of cryptocurrency from Binance users in what is believed to be the largest crypto heist ever recorded. Binance said the attack began months earlier, with malware hidden in software downloads and fake job recruitment aimed at its engineers. The funds were moved quickly, and Binance froze withdrawals before reopening them in phases.

Binance and the FBI blamed the North Korean group TraderTraitor for the theft, an attribution Pyongyang has denied. The exchange said it set aside about $6.34 billion of its own funds to cover customer losses, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain so far. Reuters put cumulative net outflows since withdrawals reopened at $4.72 billion, though Yi He said on November 5 that outflows had normalised and the company remained in strong health.

Binance CFO Kaiser Ng: What His Exit Means for the Exchange

The chief financial officer of the world's largest crypto exchange holds one of the most sensitive jobs in the industry, covering the company's reserves, banking relationships and dealings with regulators — and, since the hack, the question every user is asking: is my money safe? Ng's departure therefore matters well beyond the executive suite, because it touches the credibility of the numbers Binance reports and the assurances it gives customers.

Binance has moved quickly to frame the change as orderly. Yi He's statement about a transition plan implemented over the last half year is designed to head off the obvious reading — that the CFO was pushed out over the hack — but the company has offered no detail about when the plan was drawn up, and the timing will invite scepticism. Yek's background may be the most telling part: Airwallex operates in the heavily regulated world of cross-border payments, exactly the work Binance now needs done.

Reactions and Quotes

Binance's announcement was brief and kept its messaging tightly focused on the planned nature of the change. Co-CEO Yi He said a transition plan had been "implemented over the last half year", a line clearly intended to separate Ng's exit from the hack that preceded it by days. Ng himself is leaving to "pursue a new venture", with no further detail about his next move. Yi He also said on November 5 that outflows had normalised and the company was in strong health.

Why It Matters

Binance is not just another crypto company: the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world by trading volume, holding funds for hundreds of millions of users, its stability is treated as a bellwether for the entire market. When its chief financial officer leaves a week after a $6.3 billion theft, traders, regulators and rivals all pay attention. For users, the question is practical: who is watching the money, and can the exchange be trusted to make them whole? Binance says it has set aside enough to cover the losses, but $4.72 billion in net outflows since withdrawals reopened shows many customers decided not to wait and see.

What Happens Next

Yek takes over immediately, and his first weeks will be dominated by the hack's aftermath. Binance is still tracing stolen funds with the FBI, trying to freeze more assets before they are laundered, and will face questions about how much of the $6.34 billion it set aside has actually been paid out. Investors and users will also watch for further leadership changes: a single departure can be a planned transition, but a series starts to look like a housecleaning. The longer test is whether Binance can turn the page at all — recovering more frozen funds, concluding the investigation, and going a sustained period without further security incidents.
