Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan has refused to rule out a Slotkin Senate leadership challenge against Chuck Schumer, telling a post-midterms Democratic conference on Saturday that the party needs a new generation of leadership and that Schumer must present a plan for the first 100 days before she will back him. The remarks make Slotkin the first sitting senator to publicly float herself as a possible challenger to the 75-year-old leader.

Her intervention sharpens a leadership fight building all week. Five newly elected Democratic senators have already said they will oppose Schumer, and Senator Chris Van Hollen also declined to back him at the same event. Schumer, who has led Senate Democrats since 2017, remains a heavy favourite.

Key Points

• Sen. Elissa Slotkin said on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Crooked Con in Washington, D.C., that she would not rule out challenging Sen. Chuck Schumer for Senate majority leader.
• Slotkin demanded Schumer present a plan for the first 100 days: "If you can't produce that, I'm not voting for you."
• She said Democrats should not give Schumer quorum until he answers their concerns.
• Sen. Chris Van Hollen also declined to back Schumer, and five newly elected Democratic senators have said they will oppose him.
• Schumer, 75, Senate Democratic leader since 2017, remains the heavy favourite to keep the job.

What Happened

Slotkin spoke on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Crooked Con, a post-midterms Democratic conference in Washington, D.C., held four days after the party's sweeping midterm victories. Asked whether she would consider challenging Schumer, she answered plainly: "I'm not ruling anything out."

She framed the question as generational change rather than personal rivalry. "I've been very vocal that we need a new generation of leadership," Slotkin said. "We couldn't have gotten a clearer signal than Tuesday." She then set out a specific test: Schumer must present a plan for the first 100 days of the new Congress. "If you can't produce that, I'm not voting for you," she told the audience, adding that Democrats should not give Schumer quorum — the procedural support needed to conduct party business — until he answers their concerns. The message was unmistakable: the leader's re-election is no longer automatic.

Background: A Leadership Question Four Days After Victory

The leadership question has shadowed the Democrats' midterm triumph since the results came in. On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, voters gave the party both chambers of Congress, ending Republican control and setting up a new Democratic majority in the Senate when the 120th Congress begins on January 3, 2027. With victory came an immediate argument about what the party should do with power — and who should lead it.

That argument has been driven by the incoming class. Seven incoming Democratic senators have refused to back Schumer as leader, and an Indivisible memo issued on Thursday, November 5, demanded a contested election, warning against a "cleared field" for Schumer. Schumer told The New York Times he did not expect opposition, and the newspaper reported on Saturday that he had secured enough commitments to win. He needs only a simple majority of a caucus projected at 54 to 56 members. What Slotkin changes is the character of the contest: until Saturday, no sitting senator had presented herself as a possible alternative.

The Slotkin Senate Leadership Challenge: What She Actually Said

Slotkin's case rests on two claims: that the party needs generational change, and that its leader must show a plan. "I've been very vocal that we need a new generation of leadership," she said. At 75, Schumer is nearly four decades older than Slotkin, who is 37, and the age gap has become a proxy for a wider argument about whether the party's leadership understands the voters who delivered Tuesday's victory.

The demand for a 100-day plan is the more concrete of her two tests. By tying her vote to a written agenda, Slotkin has given Schumer a clear route to winning her over, and given her colleagues a yardstick against which to judge him. None of this amounts to a declaration of candidacy — Slotkin has not said she will run or asked colleagues for their votes. But in the language of leadership contests, "I'm not ruling anything out" is the sentence that opens the door.

Reactions

Schumer has shown no sign of stepping aside. He told The New York Times that he did not expect opposition, and the newspaper reported on Saturday that he had secured enough commitments to be re-elected. His allies point to his record: nine years leading the caucus, a fundraising machine, and the institutional knowledge needed to run a majority in a chamber where a single senator can grind business to a halt.

Van Hollen also declined to back Schumer, but an aide says he is not interested in the job and he is reported to be considering a 2028 presidential run. The incoming senators have been the bluntest voices: five have said publicly they will oppose Schumer. President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department to investigate Democrats over what he called "extortion", singling out Slotkin herself — a sign of how central she has become to the post-midterms fight.

Why It Matters

The fight matters because the Senate majority leader controls what the chamber does: the floor schedule, which bills get votes, negotiations with the White House, and the party's daily contest with the president. With Democrats holding both chambers for the first time since 2023, the leader will shape the party's answer to the central question of the next two years — how to use power it has just won.

It also matters as a test of whether the midterm victory changes the party or merely changes who holds the gavel. Voters rewarded younger candidates and insurgent campaigns, including William Lawrence's victory in Michigan's 7th District, a seat Slotkin herself once held. And no Senate Democratic leader election has been contested since 1994.

What Happens Next

Senate Democrats hold their leadership elections next month, before the 120th Congress begins on January 3, 2027. The vote is held behind closed doors, by secret ballot, and requires a simple majority. Between now and then, Schumer will need to do what Slotkin has demanded: produce a plan for the first 100 days and persuade the sceptics he is the person to deliver it. If Slotkin declares a candidacy, the caucus will have a genuine choice for the first time in 32 years.
